A Message from Janet Neufeld and Ken Elmer, Shannon's parents:

Shannon Elmer, former UBC varsity All American and Canadian National Team member, was snowboarding on Blackcomb on April 11th and was struck by an out of control skier. She broke her neck at C5 was helicoptered to Vancouver General Hospital [where she was met by nurse Sue Lee] and underwent a 5 hour operation which fused C5 with C4 and C6. She was in intensive care for 5 weeks and then onto the Spinal Floor for 3 more.

Shannon is now in GF Strong. She has no brain damage, is eating normally again and has decent movement in her right arm. Her right hand is improving...her left arm and hand are coming along slowly. She has no movement in her legs yet. Now comes the years of disciplined training she learned in her years as a track athlete at UBC. She does pullys , stretching, flexibility exercises and so much more. Most days are very positive. Thanks to all who sent cards, emailed, texted or visited. She welcomes you all.

Shannon was a teacher on call so had no employment benefits. Her former boss at the Bourbon loved her energy and style while she worked in Gastown and has organized a fundraiser for her on Thursday August 6th at 9;00pm. This pub crawl is called the Shanbone fundraiser. The cost $20.00.....[the hospitality foundation is going to match]  Participants receive a VIP pass....they are invited to 6 of the best bars in Gastown....free drink at each one....plus draw prizes along the way too. Shannon receives the full $40.00 [towards her rehabilitation costs] whether you attend the event or not.

Thank you very much for your support.

Janet and Ken
