Traffic Safety Rules

The Haney-Harrison Relay produces some traffic congestion during the race. Over 2000 runners with friends, spectators, and officials create an unusual amount of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, not only at the exchanges but all along the highway between Haney and Harrison Hot Springs.

We will be virtually taking over the roads of the rural communities along the relay route. While we are excited about the relay, local residents may not share the same enthusiasm. Some feel that 'their' community is being invaded by 'those out-of-towners'. It is therefore of utmost importance that we show courtesy and respect to local residents so as to minimize any disruption. Cautious and courteous driving is essential to the safe and orderly conduct of the race.

We would like everyone to "Go Green" — we do not wish to decrease the air quality in the Fraser Valley, and we wish to limit congestion. Teams are encouraged to use 1-2 vans on race day. See 2 vehicle plan to organize your transportation on race day. Only one vehicle per team in any exchange area please.

Runners and other pedestrians must watch out for vehicular traffic at all times. Be especially careful when crossing the highway, whether to assist your runner or at the exchanges.

Please familiarize yourself with the following rules:

  1. reflective safety vest ALL Teams are required to supply their Leg 1 and Leg 2 runners with reflective Safety Vests for this year's event. Due to the switch to Standard Time not taking place until Sunday morning, it will still be dark for both of these legs. This also applies to Leg 7 and Leg 8 runners if there is a shortage of daylight when your team reaches those stages.
  2. Bicycles are not permitted on the course at any time during the relay.
  3. Team Vehicle Pass — Two Vehicle Passes will be distributed per team at package pick up. Each pass will have your team number on it and must be displayed in your windshield in full view for all volunteers and marshalls to see.

Specific Exchange Bypass routes in place:

    a) Exchange 2
Only one vehicle per team may access Exchange #2. The other team vehicles must use Wilson Street to Lougheed Highway to continue on to the next exchange. Please see bypass map.

    b) Exchange 3
Volunteer Pass Leg #4 — this will have your team number on it. Only vehicles with this pass are permitted to enter Leg 4. All other team vehicles are requested to use Dewdney Trunk Rd – Lougheed Highway to get to Exchange 4 or, if not needed at Exch. 4, to bypass the exchange entirely to minimize traffic congestion at that exchange. See Leg 4 Bypass map.

    c) Exchange 7
Only one team vehicle can access McCallum Road to Exchange 7. All other team vehicles please proceed directly to the finish (see Exchange 7 Bypass Map).
  4. Vehicles may park on the right side only, where it is safe and permitted to do so. Parking is not permitted on the left side of the road or on the marked areas directly opposite the hand off point at each exchange.
  5. Throughout the relay, team support vehicles must not stop to assist runners unless there is designated parking or room to pull off the road.
  6. Motorhomes as support vehicles: No motorhomes are allowed to park near exchange areas. Use side roads or designated exchange parking lots.
No parking or stopping is permitted on the side of any race route roads due to limited access for two way vehicle and runner traffic. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the designated lots/side roads for parking at each exchange ahead of time.
  7. Cutting corners on the course is strictly prohibited. Teams violating this rule will be disqualified, without exception or appeal.
  8. Obey all signs and instructions from traffic control personnel en route. Be extremely cautious around exchanges; watch carefully for runners, pedestrians, and other vehicles. Traffic control personnel at the railroad crossings MUST be obeyed. Failure to do so will result in team disqualification. Runners stopped for on-coming trains will be timed. Total race time will be adjusted.
  9. Obey all liquor laws. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the course.

RCMP will enforce all Traffic and Liquor Regulations. They will issue warnings and tickets and will report infractions to the race referee. Names of teams will be recorded and disqualified and may not be permitted to participate in future Haney-Harrison Relays. See Event Rules.
