Jessica Smith and Chris Winter named Athlete Representative Directors for BC Athletics

BC Athletics is pleased to announce Jessica Smith and Chris Winter as our new Athlete Representative Directors.  Jessica and Chris will be working closely with BC Athletics in their new roles.   As Athlete Representative Directors, they will be responsible for initiating, coordinating and presenting communication between athletes and the BC Athletics Board of Directors.  If any athletes have concerns, suggestions, proposals for change or other important input, they are asked to please contact either Jessica or Chris at the information below (email or twitter).  Please join us in welcoming Jessica and Chris to the team!

Jessica is an elite Middle Distance runner who competes for the Valley Royals Track & Field Club.  Jessica grew up in North Vancouver and is coached by Brit Townsend.  A graduate of Simon Fraser University, Jessica was a 16-Time NAIA Champion on the 800m, 1000m, 1500m, 4x800m Relay and the Distance Medley Relay.  She was also a multiple NAIA All-American.  While at Simon Fraser University, Jessica broke the school record in the 800m.

Smith is a BC Summer Games Alumni (2004) and has represented BC both Nationally and Internationally.  Jessica has been a part of the BC Team program in Track & Field and Cross Country from 2005 - 2013 with a Bronze medal finish at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Calgary, AB.  

Internationally, Jessica started representing Canada at the Pan American Junior Championships (2007) and IAAF World Junior Championships (2008).  In 2010, she earned a gold medal performance at the NACAC U-23 Championships.  In 2012 Smith earned a coveted spot on the 2012 London Olympic team were she made it to the Semi-Finals.  Most recently, Jessica competed at the 2013 FISU Summer Universiade, and the 2013 Francophone Games where she was a finalist in both.

Chris is an elite Middle Distance runner who competes for the Speed River West Track and Field Club. Winter grew up in North Vancouver where at 9 years old he joined the Norwesters Track and Field Club, coached by Frank Reynolds. He continued to train with Norwesters throughout high school until graduation, where he received a scholarship to attend the University of Oregon. Chris competed for the Ducks on both their track and field and cross country teams and in 2009 he won the PAC-10 Steeplechase Title.

He continues to compete at an international level and in 2013 he represented Canada at the 2013 World Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia. His future goals include competing for Canada at the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, World Championships and ultimately the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Chris graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Marketing. Since completing his studies he continues to work for Inbox Marketer, a digital marketing company headquartered in Guelph, Ontario as well at the Vancouver Sun Run.
