100K Ultra Report

Haney to Harrison 100 km
Saturday, November 8th, 2003
Harrison Hot Springs, BC

by Ron Adams

Matt Sessions of Port Moody, BC ran a consistent and steady race to emerge from the pack to capture his first Haney Harrison 100K victory after finishing 2nd and 3rd in previous year's editions of this race. The men's race was exciting and closely contested in the early going with the lead changing hands several times. Running with the lead pack of males was the women's winner, Wendy Montgomery of North Vancouver, who ran a very strong race establishing a new course record of 9:13:05 which was an amazing one hour and 13 minutes faster than the previous record. Montgomery placed 4th overall in the race.

After experiencing record cold temperatures in the previous week, race day dawned with much milder temperatures. The runners had to endure a strong and chilly headwind in the late morning along the flats near the river, but were rewarded with sunshine at the finish on the Esplanade in the resort community of Harrison Hot Springs. Rob MacDonald of Burnaby, BC completed his 5th consecutive Haney Harrison 100K, to become the 4th 5 year finisher in the history of the race. Sessions, along with Mark White of North Vancouver, BC both notched their 6th consecutive Haney Harrison 100K finish.

In the 7 year history of this race, it has been the inaugural ultra for many of our entrants and the first 100K for many others. This year was no exception with no less than 17 of the finishers completing their first attempt at the 100K distance. This year's race had the highest number of competitors ever, with 30 starters and 28 finishers.
