We have volunteer maps, job descriptions online and floating zone directors to assist you on race day.
As it is mandatory for all lower mainland teams to supply a volunteer, either your zone director (if volunteering for a leg) or your exchange captain (if volunteering for an exchange) will be sure to note your attendance. If a team's volunteer fails to attend his/her designated position, that team will be disqualified.
For example:
This means you are in Leg 1 position A as a race Marshall.
This position 1A is shown on the Leg 1 volunteer map. You should report to this exact location.
There are exact street locations noted on maps and also on the volunteer locations page.
Descriptions of exact duties are listed below.
For example:
This means you are an Exchange 3 Race Marshall. Your exchange captain can direct you to your position 303 at Exchange #3.
All exchange volunteers report to their specific Exchange and check in with the exchange
captain at volunteer check in, where they will receive further instructions and safety vests.
Since all team captains are responsible for signing up their volunteers and making any changes, please make sure you have communicated with your team captain and know exactly where you need to be on race day and at what time. Team Captains please make sure you are giving your volunteer all the information they need to be at their post on race day. If Team Captains have any questions or concerns regarding their volunteer's position, they can contact sherrih2h@bcathletics.org for further information. Only Team Captains are to contact the volunteer coordinator please.
All race Marshalls are on course to direct the runners in the direction they are going. When you arrive at your position on the provided maps, you should find an orange plastic bag with a traffic vest and possibly a STOP/SLOW paddle. You are directing the runners, NOT the traffic, but should you feel that your stop/slow paddle would come in handy with approaching runners or traffic use it where you feel it is fitting. There are locations where there is a blind corner for the cars; you are there to make sure that the runner is visible if coming around a corner. You will have your vest and be standing in a very visible spot for the traffic to see you.
Each Leg has a zone director who will come by to check on you and make sure that you are at your location and that you have everything you require. Please be sure to speak up at your location to make sure runners are paying attention to your directions.
Please make sure you are familiar with the intersections provided to you on the map prior to race day. Your timing and position are very important to the racers!
There are far fewer traffic Marshall locations this year at H2H as we are supplying a great many more professional flaggers to assist us with traffic direction. There are a few locations where we have traffic volunteers in this position. These are low traffic areas, and are just to make sure that traffic is not entering an exchange area. Please check with your exchange director if you are in an exchange area for directions.
Each Leg section has a zone director who will come by to check on you and make sure that you are at your location and that you have everything you require. Please be sure to speak up at your location to make sure people are paying attention to your directions.
These positions are to help make your exchange area function as smoothly as possible. The course set up crew takes a great deal of time placing cones and signs in no parking areas. Please let all race traffic know in your designated spots that there is no race parking. Race officials will be taking note of illegally parked team vehicles and there will be disqualifications when necessary. Please check with your exchange director if you are in an exchange area for parking directions.
This position requires you to either record the arriving team's times or call out the team arriving. Once you have arrived at your exchange, check in with your volunteer exchange check-in and they will give you instructions on what you will be doing.
This position requires you to spot the arriving team and relay the team # to the caller. Once you have arrived at your exchange, check in with your volunteer exchange check-in and they will give you instructions on what you will be doing.
This position requires you to check in all volunteers for your exchange, and also record any teams that are substituting a runner for the next leg. Once you have arrived at your exchange, if you are on the early shift, check in with your exchange captain and they will give you instructions on what you will be doing. If you are the late shift, just check in with the preceding volunteer check-in person.
Because of seeded start times, it is impossible to predict exactly when the first runner will arrive, and the last will leave each leg/section. The timelines of each leg position and exchange position are estimated. If you are volunteering at a leg position, and the sweep zone director comes by, she will collect your vest/paddle and send you on your way. This may be earlier than your original finish time. Some positions have two shifts, so someone will be coming to replace you at the end of your shift. You will see below whether your job description has a second shift to it. When they arrive you can fill them in on your job description and be on your way. There is some cross over with times in certain positions; this is due to increased runner traffic during this time. Please stay until the end of your shift if there is a cross over.
This also goes for exchanges: if the sweep vehicle arrives at your exchange to notify you that the last runner is there, your shift is over.

Please be sure to familiarize yourself with your volunteer time and location by checking out the maps prior to race day. If you are a marshall in a Leg, expect that a Zone director will be by on race day to confirm your attendance and tell you what you are to do. If you are an exchange volunteer please go to the exchange captain upon your arrival to determine what your job will be for race day.
Please remember it is your team's responsibility to provide a volunteer, and these positions are very important to the H2H! Without our volunteers in place, we open up the opportunity for race course confusion. Your positions have been carefully timed and selected to make your teams race day safe and as problem free as possible.
