Jumps Report 2003Juveniles: Twelve athletes from the JUMPS event group participated in the Legion Juvenile Championships held August 9-10 in Kitchener-Waterloo. Of the twelve, ten athletes made the finals and four medals were collected. Mike Mason won the high jump with a clearance of 2.05 meters. Katie Hewitt jumped a personal best to win the bronze medal in the women's high jump. In the men's long jump, Jonathon Kaardal jumped an immense personal best of 6.62 metres to edge out team mate Quinton Gamble by 2 centimetres to take the gold medal. In spite of having her poles lost in shipping, Heather Zavaduk vaulted a respectable 3.00 metres on borrowed equipment for a fourth place finish. Tyler Beaton had equal bad luck, missing a bronze medal in the triple jump in spite of a tie for third. His second best jump was 4 centimetres short of the bronze medal performance. Mason, along with Emily Sheppard in the high jump and Katie Gallagher in the long jump were B.C. members of the Canadian Youth Squad that competed in Sherbrooke at the World Youth Championships. Juniors: Seniors: Clinics: A Level 2 and a Level 3 Jumps clinic was planned for November but never materialized. We will attempt to run the clinics in April of 2004. It is appreciated that there is a shortage of Level 2 and 3 Jumps coaches in B.C. and we will address this situation in the new year. |
