NON-REPORT FOR ZONES 3, 4 & 5
FOR BC ATHLETICS AGM 2003

When I took on the job of zone rep for zones 3, 4 and 5 and asked what I had to do, I was told I had to go to board meetings about four times a year. I'm afraid that is the extent of my involvement as a rep. I have emailed pretty well all the clubs before many of the board meetings and in two years have received two emails in return.

One of the emails was from a club in the Fraser Valley and reflected a concern I have had for many years, namely the size (population-wise) of the various zones. I have pursued this through the BC Games Society and was told when they enquired, not one provincial sports organization had indicated any concerns with their own or any other zones. Right now, Zone 3 has by far the largest population base and is also growing quickly. Zone 4 has only approximately 400,000 people and Zone 5 has about 800,000. I had thought the large size of Zone 3 made it most likely that they would win any Games but the other club had given another view: they may have many talented athletes who cannot even qualify for the Games and the competition for spots is so much more intense. I would like to see BC Athletics review the size of these three zones and see if they could balance these differences and take it up with BC Games.

Because of a very rough summer for our family, I was not involved with track and field this year. I'm hoping we return in 2004. I see that John Bird from Vancouver Thunderbirds has been put forward as a zone rep and I think he is exactly what our zones could use: an energetic and involved parent who has much to offer us in the future.
