BC Team Selected for Canadian Legion Track and Field Championships

July 27/05—BC Athletics has announced a team of 15 Midget and 25 Juvenile athletes, and 8 coaches that will travel to Edmonton, Alberta for the 2005 Canadian Legion Track and Field Championships and Camp from August 4th to August 11th.

The Legion National Track and Field Championships combine a two-day national meet with a two-day track and field clinic. Over the years it has produced many national team members that appear at World, Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Team BC has a history of success at these championships, and the 2005 team is considered one of the deepest in years.

Elizabeth Gleadle of Vancouver has recovered from her trip to Morroco with the national team for the IAAF Youth Championships where she set a personal best and Canadian Youth Record of 50.53m-enough to place her 5th in the world. Gleadle returns to defend the national crown she won a year ago.

The talented Justin Marpole-Bird has had quite the run beginning with his Ironman performance at the BC High School Championships, as he won the 3000m, 1500m and 2000m S/C. He maintained his break-neck pace through the summer, surviving the heat of Morroco with his club teammate Gleadle. After preliminaries and finals of the 1500m Marpole-Bird landed an 8th place finish in an event usually dominated by African countries. Marpole-Bird will be out to assert himself as the dominant youth middle distance runner in country.

Kevin Lim of North Vancouver regained his Canadian Youth Record in the 400m winning his first round heat at World Youth in a time of 48.29 seconds. He followed that up with a 48.40 in the semifinal round finishing in 9th place overall and missing the final by thousandths of a second. Kevin will look to hold of his eastern rival and national teammate Jonathan Reid of Ontario at the Legion national meet.

This trio of BC athletes, each ranked top ten in the world, will be backed by a full BC Team squad all looking to bring home medals.
