Team BC Continues Successful Season at the National Legion MeetAugust 10, 2005 Although the National Legion Camp ends today, the athletes of Team BC have enjoyed the results from the team competition since the close of the weekend. The 40 athletes who traveled to Edmonton, Alberta for the camp managed to win 50 medals and achieve 18 top 8 performances amongst them. Elizabeth Gleadle still had enough left in her after her fifth place finish at the World Youth Championships to defend her National Legion Javelin Title, and in the process break the 19 year old meet record with a throw of 45.89m. The records kept falling in the throwing events as Trey Henderson set the meet record as well as a Canadian Youth record in the Juvenile Men's Hammer Throw. He rounded out his throws competition with a Silver medal in the Discus. Jessica Smith showed her opposition that she had enough kick to win the 1500m Gold and run the second leg of the Bronze medal 4x400m relay team. However it was on the second day of competition that spectators and competitors alike fully appreciated her speed. On the final lap of the 3000m Smith moved calmly into second place through the final bend. As she came out of the turn, she used a devastating burst to leave the Nova Scotia runner in her wake and claim a second gold medal, and third of any color, in her final event.
