BC ATHLETES SET NATIONAL RECORDS
This year has showed some amazing performances by BC athletes, with no
less than 5 national records being set in the process.
Alana Redfern broke the National Women's javelin record.
In Iowa City on May 3rd, competing for the University of Iowa, she threw
55.32m, improving the old mark of 51.61m set earlier in the year by Krista
Woodward also of British Columbia.
Woodward's mark of 51.61m set at the Sea Ray Relays at
the University of Tennessee on April 11 stands as a Canadian Junior
Women's record. Woodward competes for the University of Georgia.
Stephanie McCann established a new Canadian Women's
record for the pole vault July 9 at an All Comers Meet held in Ataacadero,
California. She vaulted 4.41m, breaking her own record of 4.35m set last
year.
Dan Mezheritsky set a new Canadian Junior decathlon
record in Saskatoon en route to winning the National Junior Championships
July 5-6. He scored 6840 points, eclipsing the score of 6504 set last year
by Alexandre Dobranowski of Dundas, ON.
A highlight of the World Youth Championships this year
in Sherbrooke was the 3rd place finish for Chris Winter of North Vancouver
in the 2000m Steeplechase. In addition to bringing home a World Championship
bronze medal, Chris surpassed his own National Youth record of 6:01.73 for
the second time this year running 5:44.23.

CHAMPIONSHIPS and TEAM TRIALS - October 25 - Coquitlam
BC Athletics is pleased to announce that together with the Vancouver
International Marathon Society, prize money will be provided to Men's and
Women's Open and Masters Age groups in the upcoming Provincial Cross
Country Championships. In a partnership with the Vancouver International
Marathon Society, BC Athletics is reinvesting a portion of the Day of
Event Membership Fees from the 2003 Adidas Vancouver International
Marathon into prizing for Long Distance Running and in this case the Cross
Country Championships. "The investment is a good step forward and
complements the prizing provided by BC Athletics for the Half Marathon
Race in the 2003 Adidas Vancouver International Marathon", stated
Brian McCalder, BC Athletics President/CEO. "It is a bold step for BC
Athletics to be putting up prize money however the expected benefits and
incentives from reinvestment are very much worth it," McCalder
concluded. Look for more details shortly on the BC Athletics website.
