BC Athletics is pleased to announce that together with the Vancouver
International Marathon Society, prize money will be provided to Men's and
Women's Open and Masters Age groups in the upcoming Provincial Cross
Country Championships. In a partnership with the Vancouver International
Marathon Society, BC Athletics is reinvesting a portion of the Day of
Event Membership Fees from the 2003 Adidas Vancouver International
Marathon into prizing for Long Distance Running and in this case the Cross
Country Championships. "The investment is a good step forward and
complements the prizing provided by BC Athletics for the Half Marathon
Race in the 2003 Adidas Vancouver International Marathon", stated
Brian McCalder, BC Athletics President/CEO. "It is a bold step for BC
Athletics to be putting up prize money however the expected benefits and
incentives from reinvestment are very much worth it," McCalder
concluded. Look for more details shortly on the BC Athletics website.

19th MOUNTAIN RUNNING TROPHY - ALASKA
Six athletes from B.C. named to Canadian Mountain Running Team
After two very competitive selection races - one in
Whistler, BC and the other in Canmore, AB - the Canadian Trail and
Mountain Running Association is delighted to announce the selection of the
Canadian Team for the 2003 World Mountain Running Trophy. The team
includes four athletes from Victoria and two from Vancouver.
The 19th Annual World Mountain Running Trophy is being
held for the first time in North America in Girdwood, Alaska, September
18-21. The Senior men’s race is 11.5 km on a very challenging up and
down course. The senior women’s race is 7.7 km on much of the same
course. Both courses gain and lose almost 700 metres in elevation which,
to put it in perspective, is like running to the top of the Nakiska ski
hill and back down.
The World Mountain Running Trophy is the marquee and
finale event in a very competitive European mountain running circuit. Some
of Europe’s leading mountain runners will be participating in Alaska
this year such as three-time champion Marco DeGasperi from Italy, European
champions Alex Gex-Fabry, Switzerland and Svetlana Demidenko, Russia, and
the reigning women’s up and down course champion New Zealander Melissa
Moon.
This is the third year Canada has sent a team to the World Trophy with the
top-placed Canadian to date being Val Chowaniec (Edmonton) who finished
9th in Italy in 2001.

The team is partially sponsored by New Balance (Canada)
and Victoria-based market research company, Magellan Research and
Springbok Consulting.
The team is managed by Kelvin Broad and Angie Driscoll
(Victoria) and Jim Clampett (Calgary). Jim Clampett has lead the Canadian
Team to the World Trophy in the last two years. Kelvin has competed at the
World Trophy on three occasions for New Zealand and he and Angie are the
team who have brought Mountain Running to Canada and have worked over the
last four years to develop a Canadian presence at the World Trophy.
