50th ANNIVERSARY DREAM MILE
Organized by the Lions Gate Road Runners
9:00 A.M. Saturday, August 7th. Balaclava Park Track, 30th & Balaclava
St. Vancouver
Low key fun morning celebrating the August 7th 1954 Miracle Mile at

Both athletes used this track for practice prior to their famous race
"heard around the world".
A variety of mile runs will occur depending on a runners preferred mile
pace. The first mile run at 9:00 A.M. will be for the 12 minutes and above
pace group followed by successive mile runs until the final group of sub 5
minute mile runners have performed. Depending on the numbers of
participants and pace groups the schedule and number of mile runs might
have to be adjusted.
Day of Event fees collected for non members of BCA and light
refreshments will be served.

MIRACLE MILE 50th ANNIVERSARY EVENT - VANCOUVER TRACK AND FIELD
COMMITTEE
August 7th 1954, Roger Bannister beats John Landy for the Empire Games
Gold in the 1 Mile. One of the biggest TV audiences of the era watched
live as for the first time two men run below 4 minutes in the same event.
On August 7th 2004 the Vancouver Track Committee will host mile races from
noon until 4pm at Point Grey High School Track (5350 E. Boulevard,
Vancouver, @ 37th). Anyone who wants to see how close they can run to the
miracle mile is welcome to come by. Timers will be on hand and information
on local running clubs and events will be available. A $5 entry fee and
donations will be gratefully accepted to help raise funds towards building
new facilities.
Background
50 years ago the eyes of the world focused on a Vancouver track where
arguably the most memorable event in athletic history took place - but now
this city's athletic prowess has dwindled to the point where we no longer
have a track suitable for competition! In contrast to all of its municipal
neighbours the City of Vancouver has made no investment in track and field
infrastructure over the last 25 years. As a consequence, local students
and athletes, both elite and recreational, travel outside the city to
train. In conjunction with BC Athletics, BC Wheelchair Sports and other
local athletic clubs and organisations the committee aims to promote track
and field sports in the City of Vancouver and believes to do so
effectively Vancouver needs modern facilities. As part of the campaign a
presentation was made to the Parks Board Planning and Environment
Committee on July 6th and proposals for new facilities will be considered
in the upcoming capital planning process starting in the fall.
Information: Roger Brownsey 604-263-2814.
WEST COAST INVITATIONAL DECATHLON - AUGUST 21-22
The West Coast Invitational Decathlon will be taking place August 21-22
for persons 16 and over. All abilities are encouraged to participate.
There will be many prizes, a BBQ to follow the final day and an after
party for those over 19. To enter, email Dan Mezheritsky at dan_mez@hotmail.com.
NikeRunDown: FASTEST KID IN CANADA
www.nikespeed.com/canada
The search is on for the fastest kid in the country. Starting today,
teens can register for NikeRunDown - a national 35m head-to-head
competition involving a series of regional events designed to declare the
fastest male and female high school athlete. Teens can enter online at
www.nikespeed.com/canada. The program involves a charitable component that
aims to raise $100,000 to help kids overcome the financial barriers
associated with organized sports.
"This is the biggest challenge of this kind ever issued to
Canadian youth and we're psyched that kids will be going head-to-head in a
speed competition," said Derek Kent, Head of Corporate
Communications, Nike Canada Ltd. "NikeRunDown isn't just for kids on
the track team. Regardless if it's football, rugby, basketball or soccer
that is your sport of choice - if you're fast, we want you."
Not only will the male and female winner get the bragging rights of
being the fastest in the country, they will also win a large billboard in
their local area featuring their photo, a trophy, time with elite Nike
Canada athletes and a banner raising in their honour. Prizes will also be
awarded to the regional winners.
NikeRunDown will involve 35m qualifying races in Vancouver, Calgary,
Montreal, Halifax and Toronto. Youth aged 13-18 are eligible to race. The
fastest three boys and girls from each city will then advance to the
finals in Toronto. To gain access to the NikeRunDown, participants and
spectators are asked to contribute $1 toward the purchase of a funky, red
wristband with "Slow Sucks", "Be Fast or Be Last"
and/or "Run Fast. Brag Slowly". The wristbands will be available
at NikeRunDown events and select retailers. All wristband proceeds will go
to KidSportTM Canada, an organization that assists youth in overcoming the
financial barriers that limit their involvement in organized sport. Nike
will match every dollar spent by the time of the finals in September.
Nike's fundraising aim is $100,000 and the public is welcome to purchase
the wristbands to help hit our goal.
"By purchasing a NikeRunDown event wristband you are helping kids
in need gain access to sports programs, events and equipment that they
wouldn't otherwise have access to," said Pete Quevillon, KidSportTM
Provincial Director, Sport BC. "With the generosity of Canadians and
Nike, KidSportTM is able to instil the love of sport in kids in
communities across the country."
The program announcement coincides with the launch of Nike's new Speed
campaign. Similar to NikeRunDown, the integrated campaign is a
manifestation of Nike's obsession with speed and includes a complete
collection of apparel, footwear and accessories designed to allow athletes
of all levels to be the fastest they can be.
The dates for the qualifying races are as follows:
Sun Centre, Currie Barracks, Calgary, Saturday, August 21
Beatty Street Armoury, Vancouver, Sunday, August 22
Pier 20, Halifax, Saturday, August 28
Marché Bonsecours, Montreal, Sunday, August 29
Downsview Park, Toronto, Friday, Sep. 3 & Saturday, Sep. 4

BC Athletics Day of Event Membership Fee Sharing - New Schedule -
effective April 1, 2004
The BC Athletics Board of Directors reviewed the Executive committee
proposal and alternative proposals from both Maurice Wilson and Frank
Stebner. The Board wishes to thank these members and others who may have
contributed for their ideas and support on this matter.
The new Day of Event fee sharing schedule is as follows:
- The calculations are based on the number of Day of Event Members
entered in your event. (Those who are not registered annual members
[current] of BC Athletics or another Provincial/Territorial, State or
National Athletics Association.)
- To support this BC Athletics provides to all sanctioned event
organizers, a list of eligible members and an update to that list
prior to the event. For those from another province, territory, state
or national athletics association, they should verify membership with
their valid association membership card. If they are not members of
their provincial, territorial, state or national athletics association
then they can become BC Athletics Day of Event members.
- The new Day of Event Membership Fee sharing schedule is:
| |

$1.00 per Day of Event Mbr. |
- Associated with the new fee schedule is also a scale of
Value-In-Kind Benefits linked to each Step of the new schedule.
The value in-kind or soft benefits component of a new schedule of BC
Athletics Day of Event membership fee sharing would apply and have benefit
for both the Sanctioned Event and BC Athletics/Divisions.
The in-kind benefits to Club/Event Organizing Committee and BC
Athletics (the Divisions of) from sanctioned events are to be linked to
the Day of Event Membership fee retained by the sanctioned event and that
returned to BC Athletics. The guiding principles are:
- that the more retained by the sanctioned event the more the event
can provide to grow their participation and/or quality of their event;
and
- that the more that is retained by the event, the greater the value
in-kind benefits to the association/division within the event.
The following will developed and linked to the steps in the new Fee
Sharing Schedule.
For the sanctioned events the benefits, financial and in-kind benefits
(in addition to the standard benefits already provided) include and in no
particular order:
- an incentive to help grow participation in the event through the
establishment of a new sharing formula for the day of event membership
revenue;
- enabling prize money or enhanced prize money through the retaining
of more day of event membership revenue, based on a new sharing
formula;
- sport promotional information - provided by the association and put
in participants event/race packages;
- for member clubs, information on where to get location and contact
information - provided by the association and put in participants
event/race packages;
- for children and families - information on kids programs - provided
by the association and put in participants event/race packages;
- provision for the display and distribution of event information
brochures at the BC Athletics booth at event expos;
- a review of the electronic version of the Calendar of Events which
includes the consideration of the idea for a two tiered calendar:
- the first calendar being only those events that are sanctioned
by BC Athletics and other Prov/Terr or Nat'l Athletics
Associations;
- the second calendar - linked from the first calendar, would be
the full calendar of all events, with the highlighting and bolding
as is currently presented;
- a calendar of events listing fee for non sanctioned events;
- a partnership with the divisions of the association to provide
assistance for regional level seminars and/or guest speakers in
conjunction with a sanctioned event in that region.
These value-in-kind benefits will be linked in a progressive format to
provide more to the event as the Day of Event Membership participation
increases and as a result more of the Day of Event membership revenue is
retained by the Club/Event Organizing Committee.
For BC Athletics/Divisions of the value-in-kind benefits to be linked
to the steps in the new Fee Sharing Schedule include and in no particular
order:
- association/division information - in participants event/race
package;
- information on clubs - where to get location and contact information
- in participants event/race package;
- Athletics (the sport) promotional material that is specific to
various parts of the sport e.g. road running - in participants
event/race package;
- information on kids programs - in participants event/race package;
- association division logo on event entry forms/information packages;
- signage at sanctioned events;
- booth space at event expo and/or the event;
- recognition at some level as a sponsor or supporter of the
sanctioned event;
- designation of Day of Event revenue retained by the club to go to
prize money in the event;
association/division representative participation in event awards
presentations - as appropriate.
These value-in-kind benefits will be linked in a progressive format to
provide more exposure to BC Athletics/Divisions in the event as the Day of
Event Membership participation increases and as a result less Day of Event
membership revenue per person is returned to BC Athletics.
The materials referenced in the above value-in-kind benefits would be a
responsibility of the association.
