BC Athletics Administrative Assistant Employment Opportunity - Part Time

BC Athletics is currently seeking a part time administrative assistant for the BC Athletics office. Under the direction of the Manager for Registration & Membership Services, the Administrative Assistant will:

Assist in preparations for the 2006 BC Athletics Annual General Meeting including:

  • Electronic communications with the membership
  • Preparation of website documentation
  • Prepare and coordinate the materials and equipment for AGM meetings
  • Assist in banquet and awards preparations and presentations
  • Assist in various year end preparations: Sanctioned Events database and Membership database
  • Assist in general day to day office duties including filing, mail-outs, telephones, faxing
  • Assist other departments in the office as needed.

Desirable Skills, Knowledge, Interest

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of and experience in working with Excel, Access, Word and other computer communication programs
  • Be able to work in a team and individual environment
  • Be adaptable and have the ability to respond quickly and effectively
  • Good organizational and time management skills

Employment details:

  • A contract position for the months of December and January and possibly continuing on in 2006
  • Anticipated start date Monday, December 5th
  • Wage rate $15/hr + expenses related to position
  • 2 days per week totalling 14 hrs per week - specific days to be decided
  • Working from the BC Athletics Office in Vancouver
  • This is a part time position located at the BC Athletics office in Vancouver and may require some lifting, set up and travelling.

National Membership Database System

The framework for a national membership database has now been developed and is in the testing stages. Athletics Canada branches will be testing their systems and fine tuning their individual branch sites over the next few weeks. It is hoped that everything will be in place for the national system to go on line in January 2006. Updates and information regarding the national membership database will be forthcoming in the BCAB.

Canada Games (FAST) Track Athlete Grant

DEADLINE: Friday December 9, 2005, 5:00pm EST.

The Canada Games Council (CGC) and the Foundation for Athletes Sport Training (FAST) have partnered for the second year in order to deliver the Canada Games FAST Track athlete grant. The program will provide direct financial assistance to Canada's next generation national team athletes to support their training and competition needs. The grant is designed to fill a gap in Canada's sport system and support Canada Games-level athletes who are targeted and on the pathway to excellence at the national team level.

The Canada Games FAST Track athlete grant will award a minimum of 60 grants for $2000.00 each to next generation national team athletes across Canada. The eligibility criteria and selection process set out below as well as the information received by the applicant on the enclosed application form will be used to determine grant recipients. Athlete performance over the last two competitive seasons will be used as a key indicator for identifying recipients.

Athletes will complete an application form and must return it to the Canada Games FAST Track Selection Committee. Once the Selection Committee has received all applications, the committee will approach the NSOs and/or P/TSOs for endorsement and verification of information on applications. Incomplete application forms will be deemed ineligible and will not be processed. The deadline for application receipt is Friday December 9, 2005, 5:00pm EST.

Athletics Canada Bulletin - National Team Staffing Application Forms

Athletics Canada has now posted the National Team Staffing Application Forms for 2006 events (and some 2007 major events) on our website; the application forms for all three categories (coach, manager, and medical) can be found at 

Please note that the deadline of submission for all positions is November 28th, 2005. Any questions regarding the applications or duties of National Team staff can be directed to or to Melissa Dowling, National Team Coordinator at (613) 260-5580 extension 3307.

Call for Nominations for the National Officials' Committee

As past chair of NOC, David Weicker has been appointed to chair the nominations sub-committee to fill NOC appointments for the term April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2008. Call for Nominations are open and there's a request for assistance in identifying candidates and encourage them to let their names stand for nomination.

As of March 31, 2006, the following positions will be open for new appointments or re-appointments:

  • Vice chair Communications (current chair: Philippa Fairbairn)
  • Vice-chair Recruitment and Awards (current chair: Glenn Kurmey)

At this time, Glenn Kurmey has declared his intentions to stand for re-appointment. The Vice-chair of communications has not yet declared intentions of standing again. Please note that the Education and Clinics position has been merged with the Vice-chair, Mentoring and will not be filled.

Re-assignment of portfolios may take place, depending on the particular skills and interests of the candidates appointed. Candidates must be available to attend two (2) meetings per year, in April and October, if appointed. Both meetings run from Friday noon to Sunday noon, normally the third weekend in the stated month.

Road Running

Winter 2005/2005 Road Running Performance Clinic

This clinic is for all runners who wish to improve their running fitness level and performance. Should already be comfortable running 25-30 miles per week (regardless of pace). Includes a formal interval training session every Wednesday night, plus coaching and personal consultation from John Hill (certified Level 2 coach). Presented by the Road Running Division of BC Athletics.

BC Athletics Names Track & Field Technical Manager/Director Power & Speed Events

BC Athletics is very pleased to announce that Ron Bunting has been named to the positioned of Track & Field Technical Manager and Director Power/Speed Events. Ron brings 36 years of experience in the public school system as both a teacher and administrator and a lifelong passion for Track & Field - coaching for more than 30 years.

Some of his achievements and involvement in Track & Field include:

RunJumpThrow Program Assistant Hired

Welcome to our new RJT program assistant, Rachel Dunnet. Rachel is a former member of the Canadian national rowing team and won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and previously worked in technical support and office administration. When not attending Vancouver Film School classes, Rachel will be working in the BCA office tracking participants, preparing for upcoming workshops, as well as answering emails and calls regarding the RJT program.

Compliance with Athlete Whereabouts Program

(Ottawa, Ontario - August 30, 2005) - The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) wishes to advise the sport community that, as of October 1, 2005, it will implement the compliance component of the revised Athlete Whereabouts Program Guidelines which accompany the Canadian Anti-Doping Program.
