Nationally Carded Athlete Memberships

All nationally carded athletes are reminded to get your 2006 memberships in place as quickly as possible. There is no fee for your membership so please complete a form and fax or mail it in to the BC Athletics office. The form is available at:

Possible Dual Meets with Team Alberta

A possible series of Dual Meets with Team Alberta is being put together and could be a part of the Pacific/Canada Series. This Team BC opportunity will be for athletes 18-25 years of age. They will need to be available for the three meets scheduled for June 4 in Richmond; June 6 in Abbotsford and June 8 in Burnaby. The events will be posted and team selection criteria will be further clarified in up-coming bulletins.

Discount with Hy-Tek Software Purchases

BC Athletics is Standardized with Hy-Tek and all BC Athletics member clubs are eligible to receive a 25% discount on software purchases. Please mention BC Amateur Athletics Association when ordering.

Masters Age Category Change

The Masters age category now begins at 35 for both men and women. For those who still wish to compete in the Senior age category it is still available for those who wish to compete in that category.

Athletics Canada announces XVIII Commonwealth Games Team

(Ottawa) - Athletics Canada is pleased to announce today the athletes who have been selected to compete at the XVIII Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games take place in Melbourne Australia from March 15th to 26th. Athletics competition kicks off on March 19th.

Head Coach Les Gramantik is excited about the chances of surpassing the medal count from the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England. "This team of 43 athletes has the objective to surpass our medal count (12) from four years ago in Manchester. Our leader going into these games is Chantal Petitclerc, Canada's most successful track and field athlete in 2005. Also returning to these games are nine of our 12 medalists from Manchester." Gramantik also knows how important the Commonwealth Games are. "The Commonwealth games are the mid way point of our Olympic cycle and it is part of our preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing."

Jean Laroche, Head Coach of the Paralympic Program on the Games. "The Commonwealth Games offer a unique opportunity to demonstrate the quality of our athletes. It is the only major games that fully integrate Paralympics results. This means a lot to our athletes and they always want to perform at their best to bring medals back to Canada. Ferguson, Martin, Petitclerc and Roy all have a very good chance of bringing some medals home."

Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of track and field including cross-country running and road running.


Athletics Canada Board of Directors - Male Athlete Representative Position

Please be advised that the term of one (1) male athlete representative position has been completed.

The nominations for a new representative are to be received by March 31, 2006 by email, mail or fax to the attention of Michele Edmiston-Hurter (medmiston-hurter@athletics.ca) at Athletics Canada.

The one (1) male athlete representative candidate will serve for a two year term (May 2006 - May 2008). The voting and nomination process is restricted to senior and junior athletes who have been on a National Team within the last four years.

Once all nominations are received, the following is the election process:

Athletics Canada - Hosting of Championship Events
Request for Letter of Intent

Background

Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for track and field, cross country and road running in Canada. Our purpose is to provide leadership, development and competition that ensure world-level performance in athletics. Our key event properties are the best opportunity to showcase our sport and raise awareness and interest in our programs and services, and therefore must be planned and presented in a professional manner. The organizers selected to host the events must be willing to work in close partnership with Athletics Canada to meet and exceed expectations in this regard.

Project Overview

We currently seek suitable host organizations for the following Athletics Canada Championships events:
2007-2008 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships
2007-2008 Canadian Track and Field Championships (including athletes with disabilities)
2007-2008 Canadian Half Marathon Championships
2007-2008 Canadian Marathon Championships
2007-2008 Canadian Cross Country Championships

Letter of Intent and Supporting Documentation

Athletics Canada invites interested parties to submit a Letter of Intent to host the championship event listed above. All Letters of Intent must be submitted with the following information:

Championship event to be hosted;
Name and location of facility/event;
Name(s) and position(s) of key event organizer(s) including Meet Director;
Commitment in principle to work in close partnership with Athletics Canada and its corporate and funding partners in hosting and presenting all aspects of the event;
Summary of previous experience in hosting similar events;
Provincial branch endorsement;
Host facility endorsement (if applicable).

Submission Deadline and Address

The Letter of Intent to advise Athletics Canada of interest in hosting any of these championships must be received by Athletics Canada no later than February 24, 2006.

Timelines

To ensure that applicants have sufficient time to prepare their submission and Athletics Canada has the time required to properly review the applications, the following timelines have been established;

Submission of Letter of Intent - by February 28, 2006
Athletics Canada to send Bid Documents to all those having submitted a Letter of Intent to host an Athletics Canada championship - by March 10, 2006
Completed Bid Applications submitted to Athletics Canada - by March 31, 2006
Notification of successful candidates - April 17, 2006

Road Running

"First Half" Half Marathon

The "First Half" Half Marathon is organized by the Pacific Road Runners with support from New Balance, and is the second race in the 2006 Timex BC Road Running Series. Proceeds from the event benefit Variety - the Children's Charity. The race starts at 8:30am on Sunday, February 19, from the Roundhouse Community Centre in downtown Vancouver. The course takes the runners around BC Place Stadium and on a loop of the Stanley Park seawall.

PacificSport Regional Centre, Greater Vancouver Coaches Breakfast

The PacificSport Regional Sport Centre, Greater Vancouver is having another 'Coaches Breakfast'. We are pleased to have Stephanie Beare, Education Coordinator from SportMedBC, deliver an 'Athletic Taping' workshop. The focus will be on the instruction of ankle taping as well as other taping procedures requested in the allotted time.

Coaches of NCCP levels 1 - 3 are welcome to participate in this complimentary workshop. This is great opportunity for coaches to network and be involved in a hands-on learning experience.

A continental-style breakfast will be available from 7:00am - 7:30am, prior to the start of the workshop.
