Road Running
"Miracle Mile” at Balaclava Park (W 30th Av & Balaclava
St., Vancouver) running track
6pm, Friday August 3rd, 2007
Hosted by: Lions Gate Road Runners
This will be the fourth annual edition of the run that commemorates the
famous mile race that was held as part of the British Empire and
Commonwealth Games, at Empire Stadium Vancouver in 1954. The tradition
started in 2004, when Lions Gate Road Runners decided to hold a mile run
to mark the 50th anniversary of the famous race between Roger Bannister
and John Landy. The race was the first in which two runners went under the
magic 4-minute barrier. The reason for choosing Balaclava Park was
two-fold. First, it is an imperial size 440 yard track and so is ideal for
a classic mile run. Second, and most important, it is the track where
Bannister had trained in preparation for the big race, so there is unusual
local history. Remarkably, the track still has the classic old dirt and
cinder surface. It’s a double-edged sword of course; on the one hand it’s
a tad slower that many tracks but, on the other hand, it offers a rare
chance to run under the same conditions as the star runners of years ago.
This year, the day nearest the anniversary is FRIDAY AUGUST 3rd. Plan
on arriving by about 6pm to register (no fee, but please bring your
favourite post-race refreshments); the first of several timed runs will
begin at 6:30. Please contact Roger Brownsey for more details and to
register. If there is sufficient interest, it might be neat to follow the
individual mile runs with a 4 x 440 yd (Mile) relay race. Maybe we can
have a team run under 4 minutes??

Masters Track and Field Survey
This survey is not a CMAA initiative but it has been endorsed by the
CMAA.
The Coaching Symposium is an annual event held in conjunction with the
Petro-Canada Sport Leadership sportif conference. Its main objectives are
to present current research on coaching and coach education, to create a
network of Canadian researchers interested in this field and to strengthen
the linkages among researchers and practitioners.
We wish to present a research paper on coaching and masters athletes at
the next conference, which is being held in Nova Scotia in October 2007.
To this end, we have designed a survey which we are asking you to complete
and submit to us. For our research to be valid, we need a fairly large
representational sample of masters athletes. Your individual responses
will be confidential and anonymous, as all data will be merged in the
report. A large part of our analysis will be concerned with the
percentages of athletes who responded in a certain way and whether those
percentages are significant. The survey, for the most part simply asks you
to check off a response to a number of questions. It should take only a
few minutes to complete. We ask you to please complete the survey for our
research.
We are both masters age athletes who have competed in race walking and
are now coaching walkers and distance runners.
You have the option of completing the survey by opening the file,
filling in your responses and emailing it back to us or you can print it,
complete it and mail it back via Canada Post.
The survey: www.bcathletics.org/main/pdf/masters_survey.doc
Thanking you in advance for your participation.

officials
OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO OFFICIALS
Plan ahead! The Officials AGM will be held on October 28, in
Abbotsford, at Madison’s restaurant. Details to follow.
And speaking of the AGM, those in attendance last fall were treated to
a power point presentation, created by our own April Arsene, of “the
season in review”, full of photos of officials in action. She has agreed
to do another production, but will need you to send photos to her at arsene@telus.net.
When did you begin officiating? Please send your start year (or
as close as you can remember) along with your BCA number to Kathy
Terlicher at kdterlicher@shaw.ca.
The National Official Committee is honouring long time officials with
recognition at 25 years, and then for each five year span after that. But
they need your statistics to compile this history.
New (to us) Officials! A hearty "Welcome to British Columbia"
goes out to two officials; we are fortunate to have them re-locating to
our province, and look forward to seeing them at events this season.
Peter Hesketh is moving from Alberta to White Rock. He is very welcome,
and look at the talents: Vertical Jumps 5 and Throws Referee 3. Peter will
be in his new home at the end of May, and is already volunteering for
meets.
And Peter Francis (newly promoted to Horizontal Jumps 5,
congratulations) is moving from Manitoba to "somewhere near
Victoria" in the near future.

Developing Female Leadership in the Canadian Sport System:
Recommendations for High-Level Sport Organizations
Few would disagree with the contention that women’s leadership
differs from that of men. Difference, of course, does not imply
inferiority. Difference can be, and often is, positive. But because there
are precious few examples of women leaders within the context of Canadian
sport, there is, consequently, little opportunity to put women’s
leadership to the test. Yes, of course, there are some exemplary role
models. But a close examination of the administration, boards of
directors, and committees of sport organizations reveals a lingering
leadership imbalance, particularly when one factors in the recent
outstanding, dominating performances of Canada’s women athletes and
coaches on that great testing ground, the world stage.
