LEVEL 1 COACHING CLINIC ~ PORT ALBERNI
March 1-2, 2008
Alberni Valley Track and Field Club will be hosting a Level 1 Coaches
Clinic for all of the VIAA clubs.
There will be space for up to 20 coaches to attend with Port Alberni
filling their positions first as they are doing the arrangements for the
clinic. This should leave a minimum of 1 coach per VIAA club able to
attend. There will be no charge for this clinic for our members as the
VIAA paid for the clinic as part of the Silent Auction at the BC Athletics
Annual General Meeting.
Sharon Macauley will be the coordinator and will let us know the
details as soon as they have been finalized.
Let Tom Dingle or Diana Hollefreund know if you have volunteers who
wish to take this clinic. If your club has more than one member wishing to
take the course, add them to your note and we will put them on a wait list
for available positions.
LEVEL 3 COACHING SYMPOSIUM ~ Langley
March 7-9, 2008
Details and registration form will be available shortly on the BC

Beginning in 2008 all Track & Field results will be centralized
through the ACDirect Results Management Systems. The document found at the
link below is a draft of how the system will work and what the procedures
will be. This is not a final document but will give Meet Directors and
idea of how results will be handled.
With this system a national results program will be developed assisting
greatly in provincial and national rankings, archiving results etc. There
will be more information available in the near future and this information
will be circulated as soon as the BC Athletics office receives it.

GM’s Making Dreams Possible
In its first year, the General Motors (GM) Making Dreams Possible
initiative, in partnership with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC)
has awarded 115 community clubs grants and 10 high performance grants
across Canada! These grants have already provided funds for coach training
and development to over 5,000 coaches, and ultimately affecting nearly
70,000 Canadian athletes.
Enhancing the experience of our Canadian athletes by providing them
with coaching excellence from the grassroots all the way up to our elite
athletes is an important step for Canadian Sport, however Making Dreams
Possible could not be done without the support from our partners in
spreading the word to provincial/territorial and local sport
organizations.
CAC is now accepting applications for the next wave of GM’s Making
Dreams Possible Club Coaching Grants and High Performance Coach Grants and
the grant deadline of February 14, 2008 is fast approaching.
This year, to help clubs and coaches complete their applications, there
is a new Helpful Hints page which gives an outline of specific criteria
the Selection Committee is looking for.
Information on the grant and application process can be found at:
www.coach.ca/makingdreamspossible/club/re_applicant.htm.

2008 BC SUMMER GAMES ~ ZONE 6
Once again this is a BC Summer Games year! Tom Dingle is the Zone 6
Representative and will post information about the zone trials on the
pentrack.org website. The travel arrangements for the Games have changed
this year and all athletes must be accompanied on the buses! This means
that we will need coaches and/or chaperones from the major centres on the
island and athletes will have to get to those centres on their own. So if
we only select our zone coaches from Powell River, all athletes will have
to travel to Powell River to be picked up for the Games. Ideally it would
be great to have coaches/chaperones from Comox/Campbell River, Nanaimo/Duncan
and Victoria/Sidney. We also must have a fully certified Level 2 coach
serving as our head coach. If you or someone in your club is interested in
joining the Games team, let Tom Dingle know. The final decision will be
made at the end of the Games Trials which will be held at the Garrioch
Meet in Duncan on June 7th and 8th.

Road Race Measurement Seminar
Paul Adams is an IAAF/AIMS Grade “A” Measurer, and has been
measuring road races in BC since 1996. He really enjoys measuring road
races as it gets him out on his bike, connects him with the running
community and allows him to give something back to the sport he loves so
much. However, he has reached a point where he does not have the desire or
the time to measure all the races that he is asked to measure.
Unfortunately there are very few active measurers in BC and unless we can
identify and train new measurers, race organizers will be unable to find a
measurer willing to measure their race for certification.
Paul is prepared to put on a seminar this spring if there are some
people interested in taking on this fun and worthwhile challenge. If
anyone is interested please let Paul know at ptbadams@gmail.com.
He will collect the names of those interested and hopefully will be able
to arrange a time that is suitable for all.

A New Balance, Pacific Road Runners and Roundhouse Partnership

Tickets available by donation ($10 minimum) at:
Forerunners in Vancouver, 604-732-4535
Forerunners in North Vancouver, 604-982-0879
New Balance & the Pacific Road Runners are proud to present an
inspiring speaker, Dick Beardsley, as part of the ‘First Half’ Half
Marathon weekend on Friday, February 8th, 2008 at the Roundhouse Community
Centre. Motivational. Inspirational. Captivating. Dick Beardsley is a
professional speaker who speaks at sporting events, schools, non-profit
organizations, and large corporations. His comfortable style and inspiring
message has endeared him to audiences all over the world.
Dick Beardsley is a champion - in running and in life. Although his
competitive running career ended in 1986, Dick still has the 5th fastest
U.S. men’s marathon time in history. Best known for his 1982 Boston
Marathon “Duel in the Sun” with Alberto Salazar in which Dick finished
two seconds behind Salazar. It is often called the most memorable race in
marathon history. It was the closest finish ever at the world’s premier
marathon, and both runners broke the course and the American records. Dick
is also a two-time Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier. He is a two-time
winner and course record holder of the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth,
Minnesota and has won the London and Napa Valley marathons. But Dick is
more than a running champion. He is a fighter. After a series of
near-fatal accidents and a journey of self-discovery, Dick has turned his
life around.

National Officials Committee Newsletter – January 2008
NOC NOC, the National Officials newsletter has now "gone
digital". It will no longer be delivered by post. For some of us,
this faster delivery will be welcome. For others, it will signal the
beginning of the end of life as we know it.
Your Provincial Branch Chair was consulted by the editor, and agreed,
on your behalf, that the advantages of "digital" outweighed the
sentimental attachment that many of us have to ink on paper.
It will be delivered by e-mail, in PDF form to any Level 3+ official
with a current e-mail address (based on the National Directory, plus
updates). We recognize that this will not hit everyone who is interested,
for various reasons.
We will "widen the circle" by posting a link to each issue on
the BCA Officials Web Page.... and notifying members through the BCA
Bulletin. This will have the added advantage of offering it to level 1 and
2 officials, who have never received it.
Read the January Issue on the NOC web page:
www.athletics.ca/files//Officials/NOC_NEWSLETTER_(JAN_2008)-EN.PDF
Please note the "Call For Nominations" for two NOC positions
with terms that run from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2010. Applications
must be postmarked or e-mailed dated no later than January 31, 2008.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact a current NOC member
whose e-mail addresses are provided on page 3 of the newsletter.
