BC Athletes bring home 36 medals from the 2009 Legion Canadian Youth Championship

RICHMOND - BC Athletics would like to congratulate all of the athletes who competed at the 2009 Legion Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships which was held on August 8th and 9th. Athletes from BC brought home a total of 35 medals from the Championship that took place in Sherbrooke, Quebec last weekend.

BC medal winnings included 16 Gold, 13 Silver and 7 Bronze. Two pending Legion Championships records were also set by BC Athletes. Katie Reid ran a pending Legion record performance that won her the Gold medal in the 4oom. Nicholas Fyffe also had a pending Legion record performance in the Triple Jump. Nicholas won Gold in both triple jump and long jump.

Run Jump Throw September Workshop

On September 25, 26 and 27th, 2009, RJT and UBC will be hosting a RJT Instructor NCCP Certification Course. The course will take place at the War Memorial Gymnasium on the UBC campus. It will be taught by Jenn Schutz, UBC Assistant Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field and RJT Learning Facilitator, and Byron Jack, RJT Learning Facilitator.

Davis and Lovett identified for World Juniors in Moncton in 2010

RICHMOND - Two BC Athletes have already been identified for the World Junior Championships in 2010. Shai-Anne Davis and Django Lovett have already achieved standard in the first month of the qualifying period. Athletics Canada published the selection criteria on July 27th, 2009 for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics to take place in Moncton, New Brunswick, next July 19-25.

Shai-Anne Davis has achieved standard in the 100m with a performance of 11.94 and in the 200m with a performance of 24.36. She is a member of the Kajaks Track & Field Club in Richmond, BC. Django Lovett has achieved standard in high jump with a 2.17m performance. He is a member of the Valley Royals Club in Langley, BC.

Since the beginning of the qualifying period, on July 1, 2009, 13 athletes have achieved standard in Canada. The qualifying period will run from July 1, 2009 until July 4, 2010. The final component of the selection criteria, the Qualifying Trials, will be hosted in Moncton July 2-4, 2010. BC Athletics would like to congratulate both athletes and wish good luck to those who are striving for their standard.

RunJumpThrow: Coming to Terrace with the Power of Sport Tour

RICHMOND - RunJumpThrow will be joining the Sport BC Power of Sport Tour® which will be coming to Terrace the week of October 19-23, 2009. RunJumpThrow is being offered to the schools in the area for direct delivery of the program, and will also be hosting a RJT training workshop while on the Tour.

Background on the Power of Sport Tour®: As the Power of Sport Tour® visits different communities in BC; it brings together provincial sport experts to provide training in areas such as athlete development, coach certification, and volunteer education. The Tour promotes sport awareness, encourages physical activity and enhances sport development. It includes school and community programs conducted by sport specialists. The Tour was in Nanaimo during the spring of 2009.

2010 BC Athletics AGM - IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES!!

RESOLUTION DEADLINE

Resolutions to be presented at the 2010 AGM must be received in the BC Athletics office by October 16 2009. Resolutions received after that date can be brought forth on the floor at the AGM meetings as recommendations to the Board of Directors unless ruled by the membership at the AGM to be an urgent matter. Resolutions received by October 16, 2009 will be reviewed at the October 24 2009 BC Athletics Board of Directors meeting. All Resolutions to be presented at the 2010 AGM will be posted on the BC Athletics website on November 4, 2009.

COMMITTEE REPORTS DEADLINE

Athlete Performances - Out-of-Province

Athletes who wish to have their performances achieved at out-of-province meets included in the national rankings should submit them directly to Athletics Canada.

In order to have performances included in the rankings, the following information must be forwarded:

  1. Athlete's name, branch affiliation - BC Athletics, year of birth
  2. Competition, date, location and event
  3. A link to official results or copy of official score sheet with signatures

Only results for athletes who are 2009 competitive, athlete members of BC Athletics will be accepted.

Results should be submitted for rankings no later than 10 days after conclusion of event

No results will be added retroactively

ACDIrect downloads for Hy-Tek Meets

BC Athletics is able to provide a download of athlete members for meets running Hy-Tek software. These downloads save a lot of time keying in athlete information and make sure that names are spelled correctly and ACDirect membership numbers are entered.

2010 BC Athletics Annual General Meeting

2009 10km Canadian Championships to take place at Oasis Zoo Run

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada announced today that the 2009 10km Road Race Championships will take place as part of the Oasis Zoo Run held October 17 at the Toronto Zoo in Toronto, ON. The event will also serve as the stage for the grand finale of the 2009 Timex National Road Race Series which comprises of over 110 races with in excess of 140,000 participants every year.

"Athletics Canada is very happy to have our 10km national championships take place during the Oasis Zoo Run organized by Canada Running Series. We also have the pleasure of partnering with them for the Canadian Half Marathon Championships and for this summers' World Cup Marathon project in Berlin," commented Martin Goulet, Athletics Canada Chief High Performance Officer. Goulet added, "I am confident they will deliver a first class event to our athletes and spectators alike."

"We're just delighted," said Alan Brookes, Race Director for Canada Running Series. "This is an outstanding opportunity to grow our sport — to bring together the Federation, Canada's two premier running Series', and two marvelous sponsors in Oasis Juices [Lassonde] and Timex Canada. Together, we can build a bigger, better, higher profile, more exciting event that makes everyone — and especially the sport — a winner."

A number of star athletes took part in last years' event held in Ottawa including race winner Simon Bairu of Regina, SK, Eric Gillis from Guelph, ON, Gitah Macharia of Oakville, ON and Taylor Milne from Guelph, ON. Gillis and Milne were members of last summers' Olympic Games team with Macharia set to take part in the upcoming World Championships beginning August 15 in Berlin, Germany.

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Elite Athlete Invitation

Call for "Team Canada" athletes to compete in the International Team Challenge (ITC) at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM) on September 27th, against Team Mexico and Team England.

STWM invites 2 men and 2 women to represent Canada (3 to count using Mercier scoring tables) in this annual team challenge. Team Canada are the defending champions.

As part of the invitation, chosen athletes will receive:

Besides the race on Sunday morning, September 27th, (including the 12 noon Awards Ceremony), the only mandatory requirement for Invited Athletes is that they attend the Press Conference on Friday morning, September 25th, from 10am until noon. Athletes should plan to travel Thursday to Sunday evening or Monday.

BC Road Running Championships, 2010 and 2011

BC Athletics invites applications to host BC Road Running Championships in 2010 and 2011. Starting in 2010, championships will be awarded for 2 years. BC Championships are held at 5K, 8K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon distances, plus a Road Relay. Events are encouraged to host championships in conjunction with established events. Pre-requisites to hosting a championship include that the event and/or host organization be in good standing with BC Athletics, and the course be certified. BC Athletics provides hosting grants and limited championship prize money, subject to budget and application deadlines. The deadline for current applications is September 30, 2009. 2009 Lower Mainland Road Race Series

BC Athletics is pleased to announce the launch of the Lower Mainland Road Race Series. For 20 years, the Timex BC Road Running Series has existed as a de facto Lower Mainland Series. In 2009 an explicit Lower Mainland Road Race Series has been created, to complement an enhanced Timex BC Road Running Series and other regional series.

The Lower Mainland Road Race Series features ten of the best events in the Vancouver area, providing runners of all ages and abilities with the chance to compete against their peers. The series kicks-off at the St. Patrick’s Day 5K in Stanley Park on March 14, and concludes with the Richmond Oval 8K on August 16. The ten events feature races over 5K, 8K, 10K and the half marathon.

To qualify for series awards, participants must compete in a minimum of six events. Points will be awarded based on placings within 5-year age groups for men and women, from under 20 to over 70. A participant’s six best placings will determine their total points.

The remaining race of the ten series events is:

  1. August 16: Richmond Oval 8k, Richmond

The Timex BC Road Running Series will continue to provide an opportunity to athletes from throughout the province to rank themselves against their peers, and serves as a selection to the Timex National Road Running Series Finale in Ottawa. The Lower Mainland Road Race Series will be one of four regional road race series sanctioned by BC Athletics in 2009. The others being the Frontrunners Island Race Series (www.vira.bc.ca), the Canadian Tire Interior Road Race Series (www.interiorrunning.ca), and the Prince George Grand Prix (www.pgroadrunners.ca).

BC Athletics 2009 Marathon Championship

The BC Athletics 2009 Marathon Championship will be hosted by the Royal Victoria Marathon Society in conjunction with the 30th Annual Royal Victoria Marathon on Sunday, October 11.

Race Information

An AIMS/IAAF certified marathon, featuring a beautiful, seaside course with lots of mild undulations, but with a maximum elevation change of only 74 feet. Event records are 2:16:49 (Steve Osaduik) and 2:42:32 (Val Chowaniec). Race starts at 8:30am. Complete race details on the event website: www.royalvictoriamarathon.com

World Championships entries - Canadians in the Top Ten

The team objective of two medals is the focus for this edition of the World Championships and it is currently completing its final stages of preparation at a training camp in Kamen-Kaiserau, Germany. At the last showing of the World Championships in 2007, Canada won two silver medals; Perdita Felicien of Pickering, ON and Gary Reed of Victoria, BC in the 100 metre hurdles and 800 metres respectively.

6 relay team members eligible to run in individual events at the World Championships

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada announced today that 6 relay team members are eligible to run in individual events at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics to take place August 15 to 23 in Berlin Germany.

Relay coaches Glenroy Gilbert and Molly Killingbeck will confirm the final line up for relay athletes entered in individual events after a "tune up" competition in Dusseldorf on August the 10th.

Esther Akinsulie from Ottawa, ON, Bryan Barnett from Edmonton, AB, Jared Connaughton from New Haven, PEI, Sam Effah of Calgary, AB, Adrienne Power from Halifax, NS and Gavin Smellie from Etobicoke, ON have all met the IAAF's entry standard for individual events and are eligible to compete in their specialty. "It has always been a head coach decision to support individual runs in preparation for the relay events," stated Head Coach Alex Gardiner.

"This is a great opportunity for the athletes taking part in the relays to gain experience by racing in the stadium and on the track in Berlin prior to the start of relay events," said Glenroy Gilbert, Sprints & Relays Coach. Gilbert adds; "It will also provide them with valuable World Championships experience".

Felicien; Relay teams to get final tune-up

As one last preparation before the start of Worlds, both relay teams and hurdler Perdita Felicien from Pickering, ON will compete at a meet in Düsseldorff, Germany on Monday August 10th. Members of the men's 4x100 team will compete in the relay event as well as individual events, the athletes on the women's 4x400 team will compete individually in a 300 metre event to sharpen their performances and Perdita Felicien will also be in action as she aims for her third podium at the World Championships (Gold in 2003, silver in 2007).

Athletics Canada Awards - New Nomination Process 

OTTAWA - The nomination form for the 2009 Athletics Canada Awards is now available online. The form will now be posted year-round so athletic performances and achievements can be submitted as they happen.

The new procedure will encourage nominations throughout the year ensuring a fair representation of all seasons. The eligible period for the 2009 Athletics Canada Awards will be for performances achieved from November 1, 2008 to October 31, 2009.

Award finalists and winners are chosen by Athletics Canada’s Rules and Awards Committee comprised of seven members including two media representatives. To ensure an athlete is put forth in the running of these awards please submit their nomination to Emily Hooper; Coordinator, Public Relations and Corporate Services (see contact below).

The Coaching Association of Canada is pleased to announce that the General Motors Making Dreams Possible Club Coaching Grant applications are now back online!

Dedicated to supporting athletes at all levels through coaching excellence, General Motors' Making Dreams Possible Program provides one hundred $2,000 club coaching grants and ten $10,000 high performance coach grants to community sport clubs and high performance coaches nationwide on an annual basis.

This fall, another 50+ $2,000 grants will be awarded to community sport clubs across the country for coach training and development. The application deadline is September 21, 2009.

PNE Miracle Mile Athlete Bursaries

Every month in 2009, a $500 PNE Miracle Mile Athlete Bursary will be awarded to a B.C. amateur athlete who demonstrates dedication to a sport and commitment to the community.

Please note that one bursary will be awarded each month; it is up to you to decide what month’s bursary you apply to receive. You will need to submit all requested information by the 15th of the month before the month you choose. For example, the deadline for the January 2009 bursary was December 15th, 2008. It is in your best interest to apply in the earliest month you can since the applications of athletes who are NOT awarded a bursary will be kept on file and reconsidered for each bursary awarded during the remaining months of the 2009 calendar year.

Coaching Mentor / Apprenticeship Program (for Female Apprentices) at the 2010 BC Winter and Summer Games

This program will target female coaches in the province of BC who are interested in further developing their coaching skills leading up to the 2010 BC Winter or BC Summer Games. The program will match a female apprentice coach with a mentor coach (NCCP Level 2, male or female) and the two of them will work towards the apprentice’s participation at the 2010 BC Games. This program is a partnership between the BC Games Society, the Coaches Association of BC, and ProMOTION Plus.

Do you know a British Columbian who has accomplished sporting greatness? The BC Sports Hall of Fame is accepting nominations for 2010 until October 1, 2009.

The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum preserves and honours BC's sport heritage by recognizing extraordinary achievements in sport. All nominees must have attained a high level of excellence at a senior level of competition and have brought honour to BC sport through their passion, commitment and dedication to sport.

To date 310 athletes and 54 teams have been inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Categories for consideration: Athlete, Builder, Pioneers, Media and Team. The 2010 Inductees to the BC Sports Hall of Fame will be officially recognized at the 42nd Annual Banquet of Champions on September 16, 2010 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

All Abbreviated Therapeutic Use Exemptions to expire December 31, 2009

(Ottawa, Ontario - August 6, 2009) - Athletes who currently hold an Abbreviated Therapeutic Use Exemption (ATUE) should be aware that any ATUE issued by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) or by any international federation, that shows an expiry date in 2010 or beyond, will no longer be valid past December 31, 2009.

Two streams of coaching workshops:

High Performance Stream: This stream is for coaches of athletes in the High Performance pathway, which may include National Team or development athletes at a provincial level. Coaches can register in the number of Level 4 NCCP tasks. Tasks will be accredited upon submission of assigned project or portfolio.

Development Stream: This stream is geared toward coaches of developing athletes who are early in their competitive career or aspiring to compete at provincial or national championships. Coaches will be accredited as being trained in a number of generic coach education modules at the Competition-Introduction or Competition-Development NCCP contexts. Credit for level 3 theory can be achieved by taking a certain number of modules.
