From the BC Athletics Office
Dear Athletes, Coaches, Event Contacts and Club Executive:
As you may know BC Government funding for sport has increased over the last 5 years in the build up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This funding has helped both Winter and Summer sports at all levels – grass roots, development and high performance. Most importantly the funding has helped to:
- Expose more children to sport and physical activity through participation programs like Run Jump Throw
- Link and increase awareness of the value of sport in education, health, social development and communities
- Provide training and competition opportunities for developing and high performance athletes
- Train more coaches and officials
- Bring additional corporate sponsorship to sport
Unfortunately the BC Government plan calls for the amount of funding support to be cut in half from $22 million down to $11 million beginning April 1, 2010.
We need your help in letting the BC Government know that funding sport is important and a good investment!
To that end BC Athlete Voice has launched the "Thumbs Up For Funding Sport in BC" campaign and has created the means for you and your friends, family, fellow athletes, coaches, trainers, physiotherapists and all their friends and associates to:
- Send an E-Card to Premier Gordon Campbell
- Send a
Photo for Funding Sport - Tell your friends through Face Book; You Tube, Twitter, Email that you support funding sport and ask them to send a
E-Card to Premier Campbell.
Please see the BC Athlete Voice information and links below and do your part to help keep the level of Funding For Sport in BC where it needs to be!!
Thanks very much for your help in this campaign and best wishes for a successful 2010!!

Road Running
Prairie Inn Pioneer 8K
Both the Timex BC Road Running Series and the Frontrunners Island Race Series kicked off the season at the Prairie Inn Pioneer 8K, with some excellent results. The race also incorporated the 2010 BC 8K Road Running Championship. The race and championship winners were Steve Osaduik and Natasha Wodak. But it was the performance of an 80 year-old that was garnered lots of attention.
Scott Simpson led for the first kilometre, ensuring a quick pace. Richard Mosley, the defending champion, took over after the initial rush, reaching half way in 11:36, and holding a 10 metre lead over Steve Osaduik, with Simpson a further 20 metres back in third. Osaduik started to make a move in the second half, passing his training partner at 6K and running strong through to the finish. Osaduik broke the tape in 23:35, a personal best for him, and an identical time to Mosley's winning time of last year. Mosley comfortably held on for second in 23:39, with Scott Simpson (24:02), Kyle Jones (24:14), and Jim Finlayson (24:31) rounding out the top 5. This was Osaduik's fifth Pioneer victory.
Natasha Wodak led the women's race from gun to tape, but she was shadowed all the way by last year's champion and top master Lucy Smith, who never allowed Wodak to gain more than a 20 metre lead. In the end both athletes bettered last year's winning time. Wodak's came home first in 27:51, with Smith 10 metres back in 27:54. Kirsten Sweetland (28:32), Cheryl Murphy (29:11), and Magali Tisseyre (29:24) completed the top 5.
The older age groups produced some remarkable performances. Leading the way was Maurice Tarrant, who turned 80 a week before the race. Tarrant plans to set Canadian records at many distances this year, and he started as he hopes to continue with an 8K record. His time of 38:15 bettered the existing Canadian record by over 8 minutes, and comfortably placed him in the top half of the field. Almost equally impressive was 69 year-old Herb Phillips, who clocked 32:34.
Top masters overall were Hugh Trenchard (27:29) and Lucy Smith. And the top juniors were Dylan Haight (25:22) and Christine Ridenour (30:25).
BC 8K Road Running Championship
The 2010 BC 8K Road Running championship was incorporated into the Prairie Inn Pioneer 8K on January 10, and was open to any current Junior, Senior or Masters member of BC Athletics. The overall championship winners were Steve Osaduik and Lucy Smith. Age group winners were:
Dylan Haight 25:22 MJunior Walter Cantwell 28:44 M40-44 Gordon Christie 27:41 M45-49 Phil Nicholls 28:35 M50-54 Peter Freeman 34:49 M55-59 David Hoskins 31:23 M60-64 Herb Phillips 32:34 M65-69 Garfield Saunders 36:46 M70-74 John Woodall 42:09 M75-79 Maurice Tarrant 38:15 M80-84 Jim Sargent 1:03:17 M85-89 Lucy Smith 27:54 F40-44 Juliette Christie 30:36 F45-49

The Coaching Association Of Canada's Women In Coaching National Team Apprentice Program
The Women in Coaching program supported by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is a very strong and vibrant group lead by Sheilagh Croxon, who has been successful both nationally and internationally as an athlete, coach and sport leader.
This coaching program directed by the CAC is solely supported by a team of professional women with the goal of increasing the number of coaching opportunities and bettering the coaching environments for women at all levels of sport. Since 1987 over 500 women coaches have received more than $3,000,000 in the form of professional development grants, apprenticeship grants and National Coaching Institute scholarships.
The National Team Apprenticeship Program (NTAP) is one of the programs that has been developed and supported by the CAC Women in Coaching program. The following is a list of NTAP objectives:
- To provide high performance professional development opportunities for women coaches
- To increase the number of women in coaching at all major multi-sport games
- To increase the number of women prepared to coach at the national team level
- To include the development of resources to increase the awareness of women coaches at the international and professional levels to provide role models for aspiring coaches (Canadian Journal for women in Coaching)
Since 2001 the NTAP program has provided grants, leadership and support to three coaches in Athletics including Marnie Temple (2001-2003), Georgette Reed (2003-2005) and Carla Nicholls (2007-2010). Support of the NTAP program is a key element of Athletic Canada's strategic plan with regard to coaching development and the support of Women in Coaching.
In March 2010 there will be a call to all National Sport Organization's to put forth applications for the new group of women coaches for the NTAP 2010-2012 program. Athletics Canada is now accepting applications from our Canadian women coaches interested for the up and coming NTAP program.
A selection committee consisting of Athletics Canada's Olympic Head Coach, Paralympic Head Coach, Manager of Coaching Development and the Leader of Women in Coaching will select two nominees from the applications to put forth to the CAC. There is one coach position available per NSO for a total of 6 positions for this NTAP program.
If you are interested in applying to be an Athletics coach in the 2010-2012 NTAP program please complete the application package outlined below by Feb. 8, 2010. Applications can be sent to Carla Nicholls at cnicholls@athletics.ca.
- Coaching Resume
- Reasoning why you would want to be a part of the NTAP program
- Three objectives or goals you have that would help to improve Athletics' women in coaching in Canada.
- Brief outline of professional development opportunities you would like to partake in if you were to be accepted into the program (NCI, apprentice opportunities, development opportunities with athletes, etc.)
For further information, please feel free to contact Carla Nicholls via email at the addresses noted above.
