NOVEMBER 2005 - Newsletter #1

Welcome to the first RunJumpThrow newsletter. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep RunJumpThrow Instructors, Learning Facilitators and Master Learning Facilitators informed about camps, workshops and the progress of RJT in BC and Canada. Our goal is to stay connected with a newsletter every 2-3 months. If you do not wish to be on the mailing list please email runjumpthrow@bcathletics.org with "Remove" in the subject line.

RunJumpThrow Highlights:

KIDSPORT FUNZONE AT THE BC FERRIES TERMINAL

On Friday August 26, 2005 four RJT instructors introduced RJT activities to youngsters waiting to board ferries at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. It was a novel idea of allowing youth in BC to experience various sports they may not have been introduced to. Many thanks to our trained RJT instructors, Tom Hastie, Byron Jack, Nick Stoffberg and Kevin Wilson, for their energy and enthusiasm.

POWER OF SPORT

RJT joined Sport BC on the Power of Sport tour to the Kootenays October 17-21, 2005. Although the teachers strike made it impossible to directly deliver RJT to a planned 8 schools or to offer the Teachers Pro D workshops, we improvised and 80 young children in Nelson and Trail participated in RJT activities, and three Regional Instructors and one future learning facilitator were trained. Congratulations to Kree Girard (Sunshine Coast), Sheila Street (Nelson) and Dan and Joseph Horan (Trail). All the children participating had a blast and there is now great enthusiasm to deliver RJT to the schools and communities in the coming months.

INSTRUCTOR WORKSHOPS

Since June 2005 we have been delivering Instructor workshops throughout the province. Master Learning Facilitators, Amber Gilbert (Kelowna), Al Johnston (Nanaimo), Greg Peters (Smithers), and Thelma Wright (Vancouver) are committed to delivering the RJT program throughout all regions of BC. To date there have been workshops in Kelowna, Nelson, Penticton, Terrace, Trail and Vancouver. If you want a workshop in your area, and/or would like to deliver one, please contact us at the BC Athletics RunJumpThrow office: 604-737-3175 or runjumpthrow@bcathletics.org.

COLLEGE CLASS IN RJT

Al Johnston delivered a course to PE and Recreation students at Malaspina College in the fall. The 30 graduates of his in depth RJT course will be certified as Level 1 RJT Instructors once they successfully deliver the course to school age children.

RJT AT THE BC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

On October 22nd, 2005, under gorgeous sunny skies, an outdoor RJT carnival was held in conjunction with the BC Cross Country championships in Crescent Park, White Rock. While JD to masters athletes were running, 50 children ages 5-11 tried out the activities and had great fun. National team athletes Stephanie McCann, Kevin Lim and Jennifer Padriano did a fantastic job instructing at this event.

RJT CAMPS IN NORTH VANCOUVER

During the teachers strike four of our newly trained youth RJT instructors took great initiative and offered four days of RJT youth camps in North Vancouver. Over 75 children participated in fun activities both outdoors and indoors with a mini competition held on the final day. Congratulations for a job well done to Katherine Schoults, Hayley Spurr, Adam Wasylyshyn, and Gillian Wright. Thanks also to Stephanie Berto for overseeing the camps and Darcie Montgomery of the North Van Recreation Commission.

PAST AND PRESENT OLYMPIANS IN RJT

Olympians and National team athletes are excited about RJT. So far in BC we have 6 Olympians trained: Stephanie Berto, Lynn Kanuka, Stephanie McCann, Peter Ogilvie, Connie Pulman Tuin, and Thelma Wright. Leah Pells is the next Olympian to join forces with RJT. Many current and past Provincial and National Team athletes are also ready to help deliver RJT to children around the province.

RJT PROVINCIAL COORDINATOR

In April, thanks to a LegaciesNow 2010 bilateral funding grant, BC Athletics hired Thelma Wright to coordinate the delivery and promotion of the RunJumpThrow program in BC. Thelma has years of experience teaching and coaching youth and adult athletes in athletics as well as competing for Canada at two Olympic Games. An elementary and high school PE teacher for over 25 years, Thelma coached 1984 Olympic medalist Lynn Kanuka, and still manages many of our national teams. Thelma passionately believes in the value of teaching the core skills of running, jumping and throwing to our youth to allow them to be the best that they can be no matter what sport they choose.

RJT PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Welcome to our new RJT program assistant, Rachel Dunnet. Rachel is a former member of the Canadian national rowing team and won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and previously worked in technical support and office administration. TRACKING

It is imperative that we track the delivery of RJT throughout the province to meet our funding and reporting requirements and do our part to increase physical activity by 20% by 2010. Tracking forms can be downloaded here (Excel file, 20 KB: right-click on link and "Save Target As..." or "Save Link"). Please send completed forms to runjumpthrow@bcathletics.org for our database. It will only take a few moments to complete but is integral to the growth and sustainability of the program. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
