RJT at Perry’s Prospects!

The BC Run Jump Throw program was at the newly opened Richmond Olympic Oval on Saturday, January 10th for the 2nd Annual CTV Perry’s Prospects Supercamp for Kids. 300 kids aged nine to 12 participated in the event. 150 of the 300 kids were CTV contest winners and the remaining 150 were under-privileged kids from inner city schools.

All kids participated in running, jumping and throwing stations, with each station comprising activities of: brick building and hurdle relays (for running); agility ladder hops, long jump and high jump (for jumps); and discus, shotput and javelin (for the throws). Kevin Bowie and James Hustvedt from BC Wheelchair Sports Association led a wheelchair racing spin station, which the kids loved!

A strong team of more than ten Run Jump Throw Instructors and Olympic Athletes were on hand to deliver activities to all participants. Olympic athletes included Ruky Abdulai, Mike Mason, Stephanie McCann, Brit Townsend, and of course our very own Thelma Wright, all of whom led RJT activities.

Certified Instructors and future Learning Facilitators Gillian Wright and Sam Walkow taught the movement patterns of throwing and running. Olympic 1500m finalist Brit Townsend transferred her middle distance prowess to teaching participants the skills of javelin throw-on-a-rope. 2004 Olympic Pole Vault finalist and certified RJT Instructor Stephanie McCann led participants through running and jumping stations. 2008 Olympians Ruky Abdulai (long jump) and Mike Mason (high jump) showed participants how to jump long and high. Vancouver Thunderbirds Power/Speed Assistant Coach and Track and Field Official Larry Blaschuk coached jumping activities. Master Learning Facilitators Thelma Wright, Jenn Schutz and Maureen de St. Croix captained the team of instructors. All instructors empowered participants to be the best they can in sport and in life.

A big thank you goes out to KidSport Director Peter Quevillon and all at CTV who made the event happen. A special thank you is in order to all RJT instructors, Olympic Athletes and BC Wheelchair Sports Association for making the Run Jump Throw station so much for the kids. Thank you all!

RJT and KidSport Victoria Partner to Create Afterschool Program!

The BC Run Jump Throw program and KidSport Victoria have teamed up to create a pilot project afterschool program aimed at improving children’s accessibility to and increasing participation in sport and physical activity.

The partnership has been facilitated by Camosun College, which has implemented the Run Jump Throw Program into the curriculum for the Centre for Sport and Exercise Education, Camosun College at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. The implementation of RJT into the college’s curriculum provides a venue for the current instructor training workshop and will allow the continued training of instructors to ensure the long term success of the afterschool program and future afterschool programs in Victoria.

The instructor training workshop wrapped up on Friday, February 6th, 2009. Several trained instructors and Learning Facilitators will be involved in the administration and delivery of the afterschool program, which will take place at George Jay Elementary in Victoria.

Power of Sport Tour South Surrey / White Rock

The Sport BC Power of Sport Tour South Surrey/White Rock takes place February 14-22nd. Over the past eight years, the Power of Sport Tour has visited different communities in BC and brought together provincial sport experts to provide training in areas such as athlete development, coach certification, and volunteer education.

As part of the Tour’s Community programs, the Run Jump Throw program will have an Instructor Training workshop taking place Friday, Feb 13 – Sunday, February 15. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers, coaches, students and athletes in South Surrey/White Rock to take the first step in becoming a RJT instructor and/or  to qualify as Facilitators.  Once certified, there are many employment and leadership opportunities with direct deliveries, workshops and events happening across BC.

In the School Programs of the Tour, RJT will be involved in several direct deliveries to elementary schools in South Surrey/White Rock. Instructors are needed to deliver to registered schools in the PoST School Program. So far five schools have signed up for RJT FUN!
