Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a minimum age to participate?
A: For safety we have set the minimum age as 16, because parts of the course are along wooded trails where no other person may be in sight.
Q: Why 50 miles? Canada is metric and should use kilometres!
A: Unfortunately 80K is not a recognised distance for ultra performance purposes (selection for national teams, qualifier for Western States, etc.), but 50 miles is (somewhat like 1 mile vs. 1600m on the track). Rather than creating both an 80K relay and a 50 mile ultra, we decided to keep the distances the same. Hence the Whistler 50 rather than the Whistler 80.
Q: Do I need to the names and details of all my team members when registering?
A: No, you can add and change information, including team category, later.
Q: Can we enter a team of 2 or 4 people, rather than 8?
A: No, the only options are either teams of 8, or solo. We will review the feasibility of creating 2 and 4 person team competitions in the future.

A. Saturday, October 20, 2012

A. We may be able to exchange t-shirt sizes at the awards ceremony on Saturday October 20. Or, use the Message Board to find other participants willing to trade sizes.
Q. What is the 2012 souvenir garment? How does it fit?
A. This year's garment is a unisex, double-mesh, wicking, long-sleeve tee in navy. Size chart is available here.
Q. Can we purchase extra race garments?
A. Yes, use the Extra Garment Order Form until midnight September 23.
Q. Why didn't I receive a confirmation email after registering online?
A. If you gave a hotmail or yahoo address or have spam filters turned on, there is a possibility that the message was blocked. Other reasons may be general internet problems, high volume, worms, viruses, etc. To get a copy of the confirmation message please email .
Q. What information is needed for the Team Race Plan? When and how do we submit it?
A. The running order, name, gender, age and T-shirt size of each stage runner, plus correct captain's name and email address. The plan must be submitted online by the team captain any time before midnight September 23, 2012.
Q. What if we did not submit our Team Race Plan on-line?
A. You must submit it at Packet Pick-up. Bring the information required (see question above) and be prepared to fill out a form which will be provided by the timing company specifically for your team.
Q. What time does our team start?
A. All relay teams will start at 8:00am.
Q. Where can we park?
A. If you are staying at a hotel, use the hotel parking. Otherwise use the day parking lots accessed off Lorimer Road or Blackcomb Way. Note, lots 4 & 5 are closest to the Passivhaus exchange. No overnight parking permitted in the day lots.
Q. Can I bring my bike, and cycle with my runner?
A. No, please leave your bike at home. The trails are open to the public, and we must limit the traffic we put on the trails. Additional cyclists will make it more difficult and dangerous for runners to pass each other and other trail users. There will be aid stations at approximately 4km intervals, so there is no need for you to provide direct support for your runner. Any team seen pacing a runner on a bike, or otherwise providing assistance, will result in disqualification of the team.
Q. Our team can't participate after all. Can we get a refund?
A. Sorry, all race fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. This includes race cancellation due to any act of God or force majeure, including, without limitation, weather, fire, flood, strike, labour dispute, civil commotion, riot or threat, or similar cause beyond the control of BC Athletics.
Q. What is the contact info for the volunteer coordinator?
A. Email: (Team Captains Only Please! All Team Volunteer adjustments will be made through team captains.)
Q. On the web site it says the Post-Race party is for participants & volunteers only — how do family and friends get into the party, can they buy tickets?
A. Family and friends of the participants are welcome too! No tickets are sold for this event, and we encourage your family and friends to donate to the local Food Bank.
