2019 HARRY JEROME SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

June 5, 2019 – Burnaby, BC – BC Athletics and The Vancouver Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 Harry Jerome Scholarship. This year’s award winners are Carson Bradley of Richmond, BC, Antoine Minfray of Campbell River, BC, Jasneet Nijjar of Surrey, BC, and Noah Russel of Kelowna, BC.

The Harry Jerome Scholarship Award is administered by BC Athletics through The Vancouver Foundation. Eligible applicants must be residents of BC and be matriculating students progressing to post-secondary study. This scholarship is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional ability and show considerable promise in Track & Field, Road, or Cross Country Running (Athletics); demonstrate financial need; have attained an acceptable academic record, and have demonstrated qualities of character and leadership.

 

2019 Harry Jerome Scholarship Award Winners

 

Carson Bradley

Carson is a leader on the track, in the classroom, and in the community. In 2018, Carson competed for Team BC at the National Legion Track & Field Championships taking Bronze in the 400m and running a leg on the gold medal winning 4x400m team. Carson’s dedication and work ethic makes him a valuable leader both on and off the track. He volunteers with the Kajaks Track & Field Club as a coach with the Track Rascals and Junior Development groups. Carson’s work ethic translates from the track into his academic life. He is an honor roll student at McMath Secondary School and has plans to take his athletic and academic talents to the University of Toronto, where he will compete for the Varsity Blues while pursuing a degree in Life Sciences. From athletics to academics to community involvement, Carson excels in all areas – he is a fitting recipient of the Harry Jerome Scholarship Award.

Antoine Minfray

Antoine is one of Canada’s top up-and-coming middle distance athletes. An accomplished middle distance runner, Antoine recently captured the BC High School Championship titles in both the 1500m & 3000m. Antoine has also seen success at the National level when last summer he was named to Team BC for the National Youth Legion Track and Field Championships where he placed 12th and 7th in the 1500m & 3000m respectively. An excellent student at Carihi Secondary School, Antoine has been accepted to the engineering program at the University of Laval where he plans to compete for the both the Track & Field and Cross-Country Teams. Antoine’s extracurricular involvement and leadership extend beyond track and field and into the community. He volunteers countless hours with Special Olympics, at local running and skating competitions, and many other events. Antoine’s proven excellence in athletics, academics, and leadership make him an ideal candidate for the Harry Jerome Scholarship Award.

Jasneet Nijjar

Jasneet is a leader on the track, in the classroom, and in the community. In 2018, Jasneet was a member of Team BC, competing at the U20 National Track & Field Championships where, competing against older athletes she still came out on top, winning the 200m. In 2018 Jasneet was also named to two National teams, the Jamaican Invitational and the Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jasneet’s pursuit of excellence extends beyond the track and into the classroom where she has been named a first class honor roll student.  Jasneet is also an active member of her community where she takes on volunteer roles serving at the Vice-President of her Grad Council, volunteer with the Jerome Outreach Society and Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Academy and coach with the Universal Athletics Club. Jasneet intends to take her athletic and academic abilities to Washington State University where she plans to pursue a degree in Sport Science. Jasneet’s excellence on the track is paralleled by her excellence in the classroom and in the community. She is a worthy recipient of the Harry Jerome Scholarship Award.

Noah Russell
Noah has established himself as one of the best 400m hurdlers in British Columbia winning the 2019 BC High School Championships after having to sit out the 2018 Championships due to injury. In 2017 Noah competed for Team BC at the Legion Youth National Championships where he placed 12th in the 400mh. Noah gives back to the track and field community, serving as a coach for the Junior Development group with the Okanagan Athletics Club. Noah exceeds not only in sport, but also in the classroom achieving a straight A’s in all his classes and plans to take his academic and athletic abilities to Simon Fraser University. Noah’s aptitude in sport and in the classroom make him an ideal recipient of the Harry Jerome Scholarship Award.
