(Frequently Asked Questions)
I was 3rd (or 10th, etc) in my age
group in the last event, yet I only received 5th (or 13th, etc) place
points in the rankings. Why is this?
The event results are normally based on an athlete's age on the day of the
event, while the Series scores are based on age as of the end of
the year (Open) or end of the Series (Masters). This
is so that people do not change categories partway through the Series.
Quite often someone who is not in your age group in the event
results is actually in your age group for the Series, if their birthday
is later in the year and they are at the end of a category (e.g. age
34). This can also work in your favour, when someone who finished ahead of you in a race category is actually in
an older age group for
the Seriesin this case your points would be higher than expected.
Example: You place 10th in the
40-44 category on race day in April, and wonder why you only get 9
points (instead of 11). It turns out that three runners finished ahead
of you who were 39 on race day, so were not in your category for the
race results. However these other runners have birthdays coming up in
July and August so for the series they are considered to be 40in
your category, moving you back to 13th place points. However, the person
who finished 4th in your division in the race results is 44 years old
but will turn 45 in Juneso he/she is in the 45-49 division for the
seriesnot in your category after all. This moves you up one
position. You end up with 9 points for 12th place.
Not all the points I scored in
the last race appear to have been added to my total. Can you check into
this?
Only your best 7 race scores count towards your total. When you run
more than 7 races, the new scores (if higher) replace your lowest ones in
the best 7, rather than adding directly to the total.
Example: if you had 150 points after 7 races and
your lowest score so far was 15, then you score 20 points in your 8th race,
your new total will be 155 (the 20 replaces the 15, adding 5 points to
the best 7 total) - not 170.
I'm pretty sure I scored some
points. Why isn't my name appearing in the rankings?
The rankings shown on this site now list those with 5 points minimum
or the top 50 positions per category (whichever is greater), for space considerations. If your score
is less than 5 points AND beyond 50th
place your name will not appear. Rest assured your score is in our
database and if you add enough points in your next race to bring your
total to 5 or more or get into the top 50, your
name will appear.
There seems to be a mix up in points
from the last race. Another competitor and I seem to be reversed in
points. Can you please look into this?
The race directors may have decided to use net chip times to award
the medals instead of the official "gun times" (actual order
of finish). For the series we use official results only to determine the
points, not net chip times, according to IAAF rules, so these may
produce different results. Chip times are purely for personal interest
and are not considered official results.
On the Rankings page it says that the latest
rankings are posted, but when I click on the link I see the older ones.
Where are the new ones?
Sometimes your browser, to save download time, will display a
"cached" pageone that has been stored on your computer's
hard driveinstead of the latest page that
has been posted on the site. Use the "Refresh" or
"Reload" button on your browser to see the most recent update
of the page.
Do I have to sign up somewhere to be in the Series?
No, simply by participating in any of the Series events you will be
counted as a Series participant. If you do the required number of races
(see Overview) you will automatically qualify
for awards, depending on your position.
(Special note: for the Sun Run and Times Colonist 10k's, because of
their large size, we only use the top 50 in each age division for
scoring. If you were not in the top 50 it's up to you to notify us that
you participated in those events, to get them counted towards your
number of races.)
How do you identify entry forms and ensure that
they're for the same person between different races? Is there any way I
can help you?
The rankings software compares names (looks for close
matches, will work for most spelling errors), ages, and birth dates. You can
help by always filling out the forms legibly, using exactly the same
form of your name each time (i.e. don't use "William" in
one race and "Bill" in another; don't add or drop part of a
double last name), making sure you don't reverse your first and last
names on the form, entering your birth date
and age correctly, and including your city of residence. The easier it
is for the data entry person to read your form, the less chance of
errors in results which lead to errors in the rankings.
Another way to help is by using on-line entry when
available (and following the guidelines above)less chance of data
errors as there is no "translation" of hand-writing going on.
Do I have to be a member of BC Athletics to
participate in the Series?
No, both members and non-members are eligible. Non-members pay day of
event BCA fees ($3) when they pay their race entry fee.
However, to receive Timex BC Road Running Series prize money (top 4 open
men and women), you must be a
member of BC Athletics: Competitive, Recreational or Masters.
Where can I find individual race results?
The Event List
has links to individual race results as soon as they are available
online, plus there is a quick reference list on the News
& Results page. For printed versions contact the event director as listed on the
Event List.
In the last event, I was listed as
4th in my category but I know I should
have been 3rd. Can you please correct this?
Any inquiries about individual race results should be directed at the
race director for that event. See the Contact
Us page for contact information.
Where can I pick up my t-shirt
(or medal) from the latest race?
Any inquiries about individual race issues should be directed at the
race director for that event. See the Contact
Us page for contact information.
