Dunfee and Gomez earn IAAF Race Walk Challenge Points

Evan Dunfee, Inaki Gomez and Ben Thorne made the trip to Chihuahua in Northern Mexico to compete over 20km in the third event of the 2014 IAAF Race Walking Challenge, and were rewarded with top 10 finishes.

With three-quarters of the race completed in 63 minutes, the pack was down to six men, led by Dunfee. When Columbia's Eider Arevalo made his move at 17km, Dunfee was unable to respond. Arevalo won in 1:23:07, with Dunfee finishing fifth in 1:23:31. However, Dunfee did take the notable scalp of five time World and Olympic medallist, and 2013 Challenge winner Jared Tallent of Australia who finished seventh, one place ahead of Gomez (1:24:22).

Despite the 1400m altitude, Dunfee was only 45 seconds shy of his PB. Their placings earned Dunfee and Gomez six and three points respectively in the 2014 IAAF Race Walking Challenge, as they prepare for the World Race Walking Cup in China in May. BC's third walker, Ben Thorne, unfortunately DNF'd due to stomach problems.
