BC Athletics Junior Development Annual Report 2003
The BC Athletics Junior Development committee would like to thank Jackie Barrington for her many years of service to the JD committee. After participating on the committee for as long as anyone can remember, Jackie is taking a well deserved break. Jackie continues to be an excellent official, so she will not be too far from us in the track season!
This past year saw some outstanding achievements by our young athletes, their coaches and clubs. The JD committee would like to thank all who contributed to this successful year in Athletics. Some specific appreciation goes to;
The Kamloops Track and Field club for another impressive JD track and field championship meet. With well over 400 athletes representing 25+ clubs, the Kamloops parents and volunteers put on an excellent event, in spite of the extremely hot weather! Special thanks should go to the Meet Directors for their tireless work in registrations and the BC Athletics officials who all throughout the year support our many meets and races. We presented a new award this year at the championships. The Awilda van Ryswyk trophy for the 15 year old female long jump outstanding performance was awarded to Michelle van Ruyven on her top ten jump. A bit of a surprise for Alwida, as this was the first year of the award, she was on hand to present it to Michelle.
Kelowna Track and Field did a very good job of hosting the JD Pentathlon Championships on a beautiful sunny July day. Over 100 pentathletes competed with a few Top Ten results recorded. Our special thanks to Amber and her team of volunteers who made this a very special day for our athletes.
Our year was punctuated by many amazing results by our JD athletes, but maybe one of our proudest moments was seeing several of our B.C. athletes represent Canada at the World Youth Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke Quebec. Those attending brought back a glimpse of international competition and fellow athletes from more than 160 countries. While our JD age athletes preformed well, they are reminded that they will have another opportunity to compete in 2005.
The Junior Development Committee has found itself sometimes lacking in interested individuals to represent their club and geographical area on the committee. Those wishing to be a part of the committee can actively participate in the new year by contacting the BC Athletics office.
