Passings
Don Mills - Toronto. For many years a leader in Middle
Distance Coaching, a Coach with Canada's Junior Track & field Teams,
Don passed away while attending the CIS Indoor Track & Field
Championships in Windsor, Ontario as a coach of the U. of Toronto Track
& Field Team. He was always eager to volunteer his knowledge and
expertise to help at competitions or provide advise to athletes, coaches,
competition directors and reading the splits for competitors in the race.
"It has been enriching to have had a person such as Don Mills serve
our sport in so many ways. Don Mills stood as a leader of Canadian running
and has truly earned the designation of National Coach," stated Gerry
Swan, Head Coach, Valley Royals T&F Club, Abbotsford. A memorial
service was held at the University of Toronto indoor track and brought
together 250 people at the finish line with the lap counter, wind gauge
and final lap bell. They who told stories and remembered Don - just the
way memorials should be. A Memorial Award has been established by the
University of Toronto in Don's name for excellence in Track and Cross
Country. Should you wish, donations can be made to the Faculty of Physical
Education and Health, 55 Harbord Street, Toronto, Ontario M5S 2W6 or by
calling (416) 978-6944. www.varsityblues.ca/
Andrew Delecki - Richmond. We were informed this morning
of the passing of Andrew Delecki, a long time Athlete and Coach of the
Kajaks. Andrew was doing a work out on the morning of the 18th March at
the track when he suffered a heart attack. Although immediate help was
given, and he was taken to the Richmond General right away,he remained in
a coma until passing away Monday, March 24. A funeral service was held
Wednesday, March 26 at 1187 E27th Avenue, Vancouver.
Outside of Athletics Andrew joined Motorola in July of
1997 as a Senior Hardware Design Engineer and moved to the System Design
group in April of 2000, where he was most recently a Principal Staff
Designer. A Senior Member of the IEEE since 1985 and with a Ph.D. in
Electrical Engineering, Andrew was considered an expert in his field and a
well respected member of the standards community. Andrew was also involved
in many other activities within Motorola, taking pride in training our
Corporate Sun Run team members and actively participating in our
Toastmasters group.
