CROSS COUNTRY
The B.C. Athletics Cross Country Division would like to announce that
the host for the 2004 & 2005 B.C. Athletics Cross Country
Championships is the Semiahmoo Sun Runners.
Five selectors devised a point system not unlike ones used for engineering
projects and came up with a scoring system for sub sections of the bid
document – then added the scores for the sections together.
The selectors have commented on the quality of the bids when in the past
your Association has had to beg someone to take on the responsibility.
Thanks to all the candidates for the diligent effort put forward in
completing bid documents.
ROAD RUNNING
TEAM USA WINS NORTH AMERICAN 5KM TITLE
Consistency was the key for the Americans in winning the North American 5
km team title Sunday at the Arturo Barrios 5 km & 10 km event in Chula
Vista, California.
The Americans scored 13 points in the combined men's and women's team
competition to beat the Canadians by two points and the defending champion
Mexicans by four. The top two of each gender scored for each squad.
Emilie Mondor, a student at Simon Fraser University in British
Columbia, shattered the women's course record by winning the race in
15:23. Recent USA 10 km road champion Elva Dryer (15:43) and California's
Sylvia Mosqueda (15:54) finished 2-3, respectively, to lead the U.S.
women's scoring.
Mexico's Alejandro Suarez was the first man across the line, covering
the flat, fast 3.1-mile course in a time of 14:01. Teammate Pablo Olmedo
was right behind him at 14:03 and the first American, Ahman Dirks of
Portland, Ore., took third in 14:05. Colorado's Peter Julian was fifth in
14:09.
A prize purse of $25,000 was awarded to the teams, with the Americans
receiving $12,000, the Canadians $6,000 and the Mexicans $3,000. The New
Balance Elite Racing show, airing on FOX SPORTS NET, will feature the race
on November 5 at 3:00 p.m. and on November 11 at 11:00 a.m. For more race
