World Youth Championships
In order to provide as many opportunities as possible for BC athletes to achieve the Canadian World Youth Team Selection Standards clubs are encouraged to hold events for 15 to 17 year old males and females using the World Youth Standards. To date the following meets will offer events with technical standards for the World Youth Championships for athletes 15 - 17.

Middle Distance Event Group
BC Middle Distance Athletes, Coaches and Club Directors
From: Gerry Swan, Middle Distance Event Group Rep, Juvenile, Junior, Senior T&F Committee

In my role on the BC Committee, I have the responsibility to obtain the marks from BC athletes, in the Middle Distance Events, who have made the standard(s) or are close to the standard, which might gain them selection to this team. Canada will probably be entering two athletes in each of the middle distance events. All performances must have been achieved between July 17, 2002 and June 22, 2003. There are many other governing selection principles and they can be viewed on the Athletics Canada website at:

BC Athletics is required to submit the names of those athletes and their performances that have met or are very close to the standard for selection to this team. (See the Athletics Canada Selection Criteria and the form to be returned to the Provincial Branch - BC Athletics.) Of prime importance is for each athlete to realize that standards must be achieved in BC Athletics Sanctioned meets, which includes the BC High School Championships or any other club or school meet that applies for sanctioning, meets the requirements for sanctioning and is sanctioned by BC Athletics. No conversions can be made such as converting a time for 1500m SC to an equivalent time for the 2,000m SC.

Selection Standards for this Fully Funded Team are as follows:
800 metres Girls 2:17.00 Boys 1:59.00
1500 metres Girls 4:35.00 Boys 4:03.00
3,000 metres Girls 9:40.00 Boys 8:55.00
2,000m SC Boys 6:10.00

It is crucial that athletes who achieve the above standards, or come very close to achieving them, email me details of this. I will need the name of the meet and a copy of the complete results for the event you were competing in - See the Athletics Canada Selection Criteria and the form to be returned to the Provincial Branch - BC Athletics.

We would like to have as many BC Athletes selected to this fully funded team as possible. Please make sure that you do everything to keep me informed. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you. Gerry Swan

Junior Development N.E.W.S Meets
April 26th - Chilliwack, BC
For information on the NEWS Meets Series and this year's event:

Results formatting request from Athletics Canada
Provincial/National Championships and any 2 or 3 day meets.
In order to facilitate accurate rankings and historical documentation Meet Directors are requested to ensure that results show the exact date the performance was achieved. In other words when setting up your meet (ie: Hy-Tek Meet Manager) each event offered should be linked to the actual day it was held - simply giving the first day of the meet for every event in the meet is not acceptable. Your attention to this detail is much appreciated.
