You can make a difference! This is a much needed call to all alumni, current athletes, parents and coaches that would be willing to donate a couple of hours per week (March till June 2005) to help develop a coaching assistance program for our school sports system.

HOSTING OF THE 2005 CANADIAN PARALYMPIC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
REQUEST FOR LETTERS OF INTENT

BACKGROUND

Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for track and field, cross country and road running in Canada. Our purpose is to support high performance athletics excellence at the world level and to provide leadership in developmental athletics to provide leadership, development and competition that ensure world-level performance in athletics. Our key event properties are the best opportunity to showcase our sport and raise awareness and interest in our programs and services, and therefore must be planned and presented in a professional manner. The organizers selected to host the events must be willing to work in close partnership with Athletics Canada to meet and exceed expectations in this regard.

We currently seek suitable host organizations for the 2005 Canadian Paralympic Track and Field Championships.

LETTER OF INTENT AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

Athletics Canada invites interested parties to submit a Letter of Intent to host the 2005 Canadian Paralympic Track and Field Championships. Please note that The Championships are tentatively scheduled for July 24-26, 2005. All Letters of Intent must be submitted with the following information:

  • Championship name;
  • Name and location of facility/event;
  • Commitment to work in close partnership with Athletics Canada and its corporate and funding partners in hosting and presenting all aspects of the event;
  • Provincial branch endorsement;

SUBMISSION DEADLINE AND ADDRESS

The Letter of Intent to advise Athletics Canada of interest in hosting any of these championships must be received by Athletics Canada no later than Friday, November 5, 2004.

BC GAMES SOCIETY - EVENT MANAGER

The BC Games Society is a not-for-profit, volunteer based society whose role it is to provide an opportunity for the development of athletes, coaches and officials in preparation for higher levels of competition in a multi-sport event which promotes interest and participation in sport and sporting activities, individual achievement and community development.

Accountable to the President and CEO, the successful candidate will work closely with colleagues and key volunteer groups to provide event management services, leadership and support in key areas of the BC Summer Games and the BC Seniors Games. Duties will include monitoring / maintaining levels of service to partner organizations to ensure the highest level of Games are staged, reviewing / updating written materials and volunteer management.

Salary commensurate with experience and a competitive benefits package are available to the successful candidate. RUNNING TECHNIQUES & EFFICIENCIES AND THE IMPORTANCE OF CORE STRENGTH

Pacific Road Runners, in conjunction with BC Athletics, presents a free 2-hour seminar, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Monday, November 22, 2004 at the Roundhouse Community Centre, 181 Roundhouse Mews (Pacific Blvd @ Davie St.)

Seating is limited: please arrive early. No advance registration.

Running is practiced, but is not usually taught as a skill. Like any other movement, the act of running is a skill that can be refined, trained and improved.

Stephen Symon (MSc Exercise Physiology), marathoner (2:37:20 PB) and Ironman triathlete will focus on some of the physical, physiological and biomechanical factors that form the basis for good running technique and efficiency of movement. The goal of the information he will be presenting is to help you achieve faster and freer running and avoid injuries.

Wendy Epp, a respected sports physiotherapist and competitive recreational athlete will explain how core strength is one of the more important factors for good running technique and how a strong core will reduce your risk of injury. Wendy will focus on the need for core strength and provide you with some practical exercises and running drills to improve your core strength and support the goal of faster and freer running and avoiding injuries.

FALL MARATHON TRAINING CLINIC STARTS NOVEMBER 6

This marathon training clinic is for recreational runners wanting to train and compete in the upcoming 2005 Vancouver International Marathon, May 1, 2005. This clinic offers a shift in traditional marathon training, as our approach will focus on the development of an athlete's consistent or average race pace rather than the accumulation of total volume of mileage per week.

The program is led by Carey Nelson, former Canadian National Team Member, coach with Metro Athletic Club and a leading marathon authority in British Columbia. Carey has run competitively for Canada over 20 times, including in the '88 and '96 Olympics, in the 5,000 metre and marathon runs, respectively. He also won the '91 Houston Marathon in 2:12:28. Author of "The Five Easy Steps to Heart Rate Monitor Running".

REMINDERS

TRAINING GROUP FOR 15 AND OLDER ON VANCOUVER ISLAND

A new track and field training group for Vancouver Island athletes 15 years old and older has been developed by Graham Morfitt and Tony Dickson. The groups purpose is for older athletes from around the Island to come together and train as a cohort once a week. Coaches from around the Island will be assisting with the coaching. All event areas except Pole Vault will be supported. Head coaches will be Tony Dickson (jumps, sprints/hurdles), Graham Morfitt (Javelin and core speed and power training), John May (sprints and hurdles), John Root (Circle Throws).

This group is only a training group. It is not a club. Athletes must be registered with B.C. Athletics and their home town club. The training group is being created to form a supportive, motivating environment for training and coaching rather than a new club.

The registration fee is $240 for membership with this group. All athletes will receive a year long training program that they can take home and discuss and work on with their home coaches, video analysis sessions and an opportunity to travel as a group to three early season meets (2 indoor in Seattle and 1 outdoor in Oregon). Registration fees will largely go towards paying guest coaches travel stipends as well as the training group coaches travel fares to the meets.

The group starts practices on Sunday October 24, 2004. Most practices will be held at the Courtenay track starting at 10:30 am and running through to 1:00 pm. Practices will continue each Sunday thereafter at the same time. We will be practicing in Duncan one Sunday a month (dates to be announced).

Food will not be included in practices. Please make sure athletes bring their own snacks and lunch if required. Also, practice will be on rain or shine. Please be prepared for the weather! Rain gear, extra socks ...etc.

UBC CHILDHOOD ASTHMA STUDY

The PATHways project is a study of childhood asthma at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. We are in search of youth with asthma (ages 9-18) to participate with a parent. This is an opportunity for children and teens that have been diagnosed with asthma to participate in research, get feedback about their health, and earn $50 for each visit up to a total of $425 over 2 years.

Through placing information about our study in the BC Athletics Bulletin, we are hoping to recruit families of asthmatic youth who may be coping with their asthma while engaging in physical activities. The Aboriginal Sport Circle, Canada's National Voice for Aboriginal Sport and Recreation has recognized Outstanding Male and Female Coaches and Athletes for over four years through the Tom Longboat Awards and National Aboriginal Coaching Awards.

You are invited to nominate outstanding Aboriginal Athletes and Coaches who are making a difference. The awards will be presented in February 2005 in Ottawa. National winners of the awards receive a $500 cash bursary, trophy, medallion & apparel in recognition of their contributions. The deadline for Nominations is January 14, 2005.

WALK "THE WALK"

Hello from Ontario,
I am an elementary school teacher that has started a program I call "The Walk". I have measured out a 500m walking/running path around our school yard. Students and staff are encouraged to do "The Walk" daily. Student helpers record and tabulate distances, which are transferred to a Canadian map painted on our gym wall. We set goals (1st one was to walk the distance to Toronto and back), which we completed in 1 day. It is being done for fun, fitness, goal setting and socialization. We are (slowly, very slowly) building a website to keep track of our distances and those of other schools that join with us in this activity. BC COMMUNITIES INVITED TO BID TO HOST BC GAMES

The BC Games Society announced today that bids to host the 2008 and 2010 BC Summer and BC Winter Games are now being accepted. Bid packages for BC's largest multi-disciplinary organized competitions were sent to community mayors and regional districts across BC. The deadline for submission of completed bids from potential host communities is February 28, 2005.

"The BC Games are a positive investment in communities," said Kelly Mann, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. "Government, businesses and volunteers come together in the spirit of sport and contribute to an event which generates an economic impact of approximately $1.2 million from the BC Winter Games and $2.2 million from the BC Summer Games."

The City of Port Alberni is the only community in BC to have hosted four BC Games events, including the recent 2004 BC Winter Games. Mayor Ken McRae understands the benefits. "The BC Games created a network volunteers, inspired our young athletes, and contributed to first class facilities. Through the BC Games our community acquired the infrastructure and talent necessary to accomplish great things."

From the local playground to the Olympic and Paralympic podiums, the BC Games are part of the rich fabric of sport and physical activity in BC. "BC's best developing athletes and coaches attend the Games on their path to athletic excellence," said the Honourable John Les, Minster of Small Business and Economic Development and the Minister responsible for amateur sport. "Our goal in this province is to continue to provide the strongest amateur sports system in the country as we prepare for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games."

Since 1978, the BC Games Society has staged the BC Summer and BC Winter Games. Over the 26-year history, the Games have been hosted in 37 communities around BC and have involved 100,000 athletes representing every region of the province.

2005 BC ATHLETICS MEMBERSHIP FEES

The 2005 BC Athletics membership fees, as voted on and passed at the 2004 BC Athletics Annual General Meeting, are outlined below. This fee structure will come into effect as of October 1, 2004 with any memberships applied for with an application date of October 1st or later applied to the 2005 membership year:

Participation and Supporting Membership Types - not valid for event entry

Supporting member (fitness/social members of clubs) $ 10.00
Track Rascals (formerly Participation) - 6 to 8 year olds $ 10.00

Athlete Membership types - valid for event entry

Junior Development - 9 to 15 year olds $ 55.00
Juvenile - 16 and 17 year olds $ 70.00
Junior - 18 and 19 year olds $ 80.00
Senior - 20 to 39 year olds $ 90.00
Master - 40 year olds and over $ 40.00
Adult Recreation Runner - 20 year olds and over $ 35.00

Day of Event Membership

All ages, non-members of either BC Athletics or another Athletics Canada provincial sport organization or another IAAF national athletics federation participating in sanctioned athletics events $ 3.00

BC Summer Games and Alternate Meet Membership

Valid for BC Summer Games or Alternate Meet entry and for training post BC Summer Games Zone Team selection
Midget - 14 and 15 year olds $ 20.00

Non-Athlete Membership Types - not valid for event entry unless indicated

Coach - any age $ 55.00
Associate - Club Administrators, Club Directors, Friends of BC Athletics $ 25.00
Officials - Athletics Technical Officials $ 15.00

Schools Membership Types - valid for event entry from September 15 to June 30

School Day of Event $ 3.00

School District Club - for Zones 2, 6, 7 and 8 $200.00

2005 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

BC Athletics is looking for volunteers to take on a division of the annual BC Athletics Calendar of Events. You will be asked to manage and update this year's 2004 and compile event data for the 2005 calendar. An Excel file of the 2004 calendar document will be provided. Divisions available are:
1.) Track & Field
2.) Cross Country
3.) Road Running & Road Relays
4.) Marathon
5.) Ultra & trail
6.) Triathlon

NEW BC ATHLETICS DAY OF EVENT MEMBERSHIP FEE

BC Athletics Day of Event Membership Fee Sharing - New Schedule - effective April 1, 2004

The BC Athletics Board of Directors reviewed the Executive committee proposal and alternative proposals from both Maurice Wilson and Frank Stebner. The Board wishes to thank these members and others who may have contributed for their ideas and support on this matter.

The new Day of Event fee sharing schedule is as follows:

  1. The calculations are based on the number of Day of Event Members entered in your event. (Those who are not registered annual members [current] of BC Athletics or another Provincial/Territorial, State or National Athletics Association.)
  2. To support this BC Athletics provides to all sanctioned event organizers, a list of eligible members and an update to that list prior to the event. For those from another province, territory, state or national athletics association, they should verify membership with their valid association membership card. If they are not members of their provincial, territorial, state or national athletics association then they can become BC Athletics Day of Event members.
  3. The new Day of Event Membership Fee sharing schedule is:

  1. Associated with the new fee schedule is also a scale of Value-In-Kind Benefits linked to each Step of the new schedule.

The value in-kind or soft benefits component of a new schedule of BC Athletics Day of Event membership fee sharing would apply and have benefit for both the Sanctioned Event and BC Athletics/Divisions.

The in-kind benefits to Club/Event Organizing Committee and BC Athletics (the Divisions of) from sanctioned events are to be linked to the Day of Event Membership fee retained by the sanctioned event and that returned to BC Athletics. The guiding principles are:

  1. that the more retained by the sanctioned event the more the event can provide to grow their participation and/or quality of their event; and
  2. that the more that is retained by the event, the greater the value in-kind benefits to the association/division within the event.

The following will developed and linked to the steps in the new Fee Sharing Schedule.

For the sanctioned events the benefits, financial and in-kind benefits (in addition to the standard benefits already provided) include and in no particular order:

  • an incentive to help grow participation in the event through the establishment of a new sharing formula for the day of event membership revenue;
  • enabling prize money or enhanced prize money through the retaining of more day of event membership revenue, based on a new sharing formula;
  • sport promotional information - provided by the association and put in participants event/race packages;
  • for member clubs, information on where to get location and contact information - provided by the association and put in participants event/race packages;
  • for children and families - information on kids programs - provided by the association and put in participants event/race packages;
  • provision for the display and distribution of event information brochures at the BC Athletics booth at event expos;
  • a review of the electronic version of the Calendar of Events which includes the consideration of the idea for a two tiered calendar:
    • the first calendar being only those events that are sanctioned by BC Athletics and other Prov/Terr or Nat'l Athletics Associations;
    • the second calendar - linked from the first calendar, would be the full calendar of all events, with the highlighting and bolding as is currently presented;
  • a calendar of events listing fee for non sanctioned events;
  • a partnership with the divisions of the association to provide assistance for regional level seminars and/or guest speakers in conjunction with a sanctioned event in that region.

These value-in-kind benefits will be linked in a progressive format to provide more to the event as the Day of Event Membership participation increases and as a result more of the Day of Event membership revenue is retained by the Club/Event Organizing Committee.

For BC Athletics/Divisions of the value-in-kind benefits to be linked to the steps in the new Fee Sharing Schedule include and in no particular order:

  • association/division information - in participants event/race package;
  • information on clubs - where to get location and contact information - in participants event/race package;
  • Athletics (the sport) promotional material that is specific to various parts of the sport e.g. road running - in participants event/race package;
  • information on kids programs - in participants event/race package;
  • association division logo on event entry forms/information packages;
  • signage at sanctioned events;
  • booth space at event expo and/or the event;
  • recognition at some level as a sponsor or supporter of the sanctioned event;
  • designation of Day of Event revenue retained by the club to go to prize money in the event;
    association/division representative participation in event awards presentations - as appropriate.

These value-in-kind benefits will be linked in a progressive format to provide more exposure to BC Athletics/Divisions in the event as the Day of Event Membership participation increases and as a result less Day of Event membership revenue per person is returned to BC Athletics.

The materials referenced in the above value-in-kind benefits would be a responsibility of the association.
