2005 SILENT AUCTION REQUEST

The silent auction held at the BC Athletics Annual Awards Banquet each year is always a high point in the Annual General Meeting/Awards Banquet weekend. We'd like to improve on a good thing and that means we have to start planning now. Clubs, Sponsors and Members are asked to contact BC Athletics as early as possible (even now) and let us know what you will be able to donate for the 2005 Silent Auction. Our goal is to get pictures and/or descriptions of the items up on the website well before the event. ATHLETICS CANADA

NEW MANAGER OF EVENTS FOR ATHLETICS CANADA

(February 2, 2004, Ottawa) – In its ongoing commitment towards hosting entertaining, high-level, well-organized national championships, Athletics Canada is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Hardy as the new manager of events of the association.

Hardy is a well-seasoned event manager and sport marketer who is no stranger to the Canadian track and field community or to amateur sport in general. His event management career was launched in 1987, working with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in London, England. In 1990, he returned to Canada for two years to work as Athletics Canada’s competitions coordinator, following which he returned to the IAAF for an additional five years to work as the organization’s technical director/deputy director of competition. Hardy has also worked as senior manager/head of event operations for ISL Marketing in Lucerne, Switzerland as well as deputy chief operating officer for the Canadian Soccer Association. With 17 years of hands-on experience in planning major events, Hardy’s long list of accomplishments include the successful staging of the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton and the 2003 IAAF World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke as the director of competition.

“Paul brings a wealth of experience in dealing with organizing committees, sponsors, athletes and the media, and we are delighted to welcome him to our team,” says Joanne Mortimore, chief operating officer of Athletics Canada. “He has been involved in some of the world’s largest sporting events and we look forward to his guidance and contribution towards bringing our national championships to a higher level. His professional attitude and enthusiasm, as well as his team approach with organizing committees will bode well as we set higher standards of delivery for our future events.”

Hardy begins work with Athletics Canada today. Initially, he will be working on a part-time basis for the association due to a current commitment to running the Can-Am Police Fire Games, taking place in London ON July 11 to 18. Hardy’s immediate focus will be the management of the bidding process for Athletics Canada’s 2005-2006 national championships as well as liaison with organizing committees for the six upcoming 2004 national championships. This includes track and field’s key domestic event this summer, the 2004 Canada Dry Canadian Senior Championships and Olympic Trials taking place in Victoria, July 9-11

Hardy will be working in concert with Athletics Canada’s new marketing associates, Margie Schuett and Susan Elliot, as well as with the association’s director of communications, Penny Joyce and AC’s marketing and events coordinator, Ivonne Shoucair. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

NCM ELITE ATHLETE BURSARY

The deadline for NCM Elite Athlete Bursary has been extended to Friday, Feb 13th, 2004. This award is open to any Canadian citizen who will be a full-time post-secondary student in the 2004-2005 academic year.

The award is $3000 CDN. It includes free travel & accommodation to Ottawa for the National Capital Race Weekend (May 28-30th) and free entry into the race of their choice (if the athlete wishes to compete).

REMINDERS

PACIFICSPORT ON THE MOVE

Effective January 22, 2004, PacificSport Group, the PacificSport Canadian and Regional Sport Centres Vancouver, and the National Coaching Institute-BC (Vancouver Campus) will be moving to the TELUS Centre for Sport. In the weeks to come SportMedBC and other sports associations will move into the building. Phone, fax, and Internet communication may be limited while in transition. The new address will be TELUS Centre for Sport, 500 - 1333 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6H 4C1. Telephone numbers will remain the same. There is a visitor lot off Birch St. north of Broadway (pay) and metered parking on Broadway and some of the side streets. There is also a pay lot behind Staples on the south side of Broadway.


DAY OF EVENT MEMBERSHIP POLICY

As approved by the BC Athletics Board of Directors the policy with respect to providing Day of Event Membership for sanctioned competitions has been amended - this should be shown as an additional $3.00 for those entrants who are not current members of BC Athletics or another Athletics Association. It is appreciated that this may not be possible for events that have their planning well underway. During this phase-in year, please present wherever possible, the BC Athletics Day of Event Membership as an additional $3.00. (Note: The previous policy allowed for either an additional $3.00 for non members or a $3.00 deduction for BC Athletics members or members from another Athletics Association.) The event entry form must also provide space for the entrant to put in their current BC Athletics or equivalent Athletics Association membership number.

The intended result of this change in how the Day of Event Membership Fee is presented on the entry form is to: a) insure that the full amount of the entry fee is retained by the event organizing committee; b) more clearly reflect one of the benefits of BC Athletics Membership; and c) visibly demonstrates a financial return to the event organizer, through the sharing of the Day of Event Membership fee.

The sharing of the Day of Event Membership Fee is: for events up to and including 2,000
participants the host organizing committee retains $1.00 and $2.00 is returned to BC Athletics. For events of greater than 2,000 participants the Day of Event Membership Fee is split 50/50 ($1.50 retained by the host organizing committee and $1.50 returned to BC Athletics).

The amount returned to BC Athletics goes to support these and other programs/services:

  • Youth, developing athlete and adult participant development - camps, clinics and resources
  • Event Insurance (Liability) for all Day of Event Members
  • Event promotion and a direct link from the BC Athletics Calendar of Events web pages
  • Technical assistance and support to event organizers
  • BC Team programs for Juvenile, Junior, Senior and Masters age groups in Road Running, Cross Country, Race Walking and Track & Field in National Championships, Canada and Western Canada Games
  • Officials training and event officiating support
  • Coaches education and training
  • Prizing in selected events
  • BC Championship programs in Road Running, Race Walking, Marathon, Cross Country Running, Track & Field, Road Relays and Ultra Running
  • Regional Series support for Track & Field, Road and Cross Country Running
  • Website maintenance, enhancement and electronic communication to all members

Day of Event Membership Fees:

At the BC Athletics Annual General Meeting, Jan 23, 24, 25, 2004 a resolution on membership fees was passed that maintained the BC Athletics Day of Event Membership Fee at $3.00 for nonmembers of BC Athletics or another Athletics Provincial, State or National Association or Federation to enter a BC Athletics/Athletics Canada/IAAF Sanctioned competition in British Columbia. The sharing of the Day of Event Membership revenue remains as it is currently until such a time as the Board of Directors rules on the motion passed by the BC Athletics Executive Committee. (See below for this motion)

BC Athletics Day of Event Membership Fee Sharing:

The following motion was passed at the January 13 Executive Committee meeting. The process now is that this goes to the full Board of Directors at their meeting of March 27, 2004 for debate and voting by the Board.

Motion: That the sharing of BC Athletics Day of Event Membership revenue be:

Number of Participants in Event Fee Retained by Event Organizer Fee Returned to BC Athletics
1 to 5000 $1.00 $2.00
5001 to 10,000 $1.50 $1.50
10,001 to 15,000 $1.75 $1.25
15,001 and over $2.00 $1.00
 

In addition to the above fee schedule, BC Athletics will also outline a series value in kind benefits to both the Event Organizer and BC Athletics and/or its Divisions (Road Running, Cross Country, Race Walk and Track & Field) to be included at each level of event participation as outlined above.

Rationale for the Motion:

  • The sliding scale enhances the return to those events that increase their participation;
  • That the sharing of the Day of Event Membership fees supports both the Event Organizing Committee and BC Athletics;
  • That the value in kind benefits to both the Event and BC Athletics is meant to provide:
    • enhanced profile;
    • reflect a partnership in helping to build both event participation and membership in BC Athletics; and
    • tangible benefits to both the Event Organizer and BC Athletics through event sanctioning.
