Synthetic Surfaced (Rubberized) Track & Field Facility for Vancouver?????

For almost two years now advocates for a synthetic surfaced track & field facility have been lobbying and presenting proposals the Vancouver Parks Board and City Council. So far the politicians have acknowledged the need but have yet to commit to building or refurbishing / upgrading any existing rubberized asphalt tracks in Vancouver parks or at schools. Please see the article (link below) in the April 7/06 edition of The Vancouver Courier about the most recent developments and the efforts to put in place a synthetic surfaced track & field facility in Vancouver.

Question: What has 8 legs, 16 feet and runs all day?
Answer: The Thrifty Foods Vancouver Island Road Relay

Experienced Haney 2 Harrison Relay teams know the fun that comes with participating in the premier BC team running event every fall. Did you know there is a springtime event that allows runners to capture that same magic?

Alert your captain that it is time to get your team together again, because the Thrifty Foods Island Relay is happening on May 27th! For the first time, the event is not being run on the May long weekend. Now teams from the Lower Mainland can travel back and forth with ease.

The Thrifty Foods Vancouver Island relay is a unique adventure uniting athletes, communities and volunteers in a celebration of running, teamwork and life. Each relay team has eight runners, but individuals are encouraged to sign up and will be matched with an existing team. (There are lots of teams looking for additional runners.)

Join hundreds of other participants who come to this annual event to run along some of the most beautiful ocean views on the west coast. The route starts in Courtenay, follows the eastern island shore through to Nanaimo and features a rolling course with gentle, warm breezes, post event meal and party at the finish line (all included in the team price). These are just some of the amenities that make the Thrifty Foods Island Relay the premiere team running event on the Island.

To make your weekend complete, numerous tour groups and businesses are offering discounts to relay participants for accommodations and activities such as kayaking, cycling, sailing, fishing, diving and other excursions. Stay tuned to the website for updates.

Check out the details at and register on line now!

This relay is not only scenic and challenging but also has a purpose. The funds raised will go towards helping PacificSport provide athletic programs, such as XploreSportZ summer camps for inner city children and families. The BC Transplant Society will be on site to raise awareness about the need for organ donors.

See you at the finish line!
