To make sure the two new Masters categories are set up as simply and fairly as possible the following changes have been made to the categories. They are now based more on the members' age rather than what the member participates in. Please also note the name changes. These changes are now updated on ACDirect and in the on-line membership form on the BCA website.

Masters 40+

Masters 35-39

Note: In order to be eligible for Road and Cross Country Championships and championship medals, selection to BC Teams and funding, 35 - 39 year olds are required to hold a "Senior" membership and compete in the "Senior" category.

Masters in the Master 35-39 and Master 40+ categories who wish to compete as both a Master and a Senior should take out a "Senior" membership and indicate their particular Master category as a second membership type. The fee will be $94.50 and will include both memberships chosen.

'Run for your Life' presented by VJFF

This film chronicles the story of the amazing Fred Lebow, an eccentric Jewish immigrant from Transylvania who was the inspiration behind New York's first marathon in 1976. Using wonderful archival footage of interviews with early runners, Mayor Ed Koch and Lebow's friends and family, we learn of the revolutionary vision that lay behind the first marathon. Lebow actively recruited women and lay runners into a sport that had previously been the domain of elite male athletes, thereby changing the face of the sport worldwide.

AC Announcement regarding the Director / Head Coach, Development Programs position

As a result of an internal technical alignment review, Athletics Canada announced today that the position of Director / Head Coach, Development Programs which was implemented in July 2007 will conclude December 2, 2009 following the completion of two fall training camps. The decision finalizes the alignment of the High Performance Structure for this quadrennial following the addition of National Event Group coaches.

A revised structure aligned with Athletics Canada's Strategic Plan, outlining roles and responsibilities with a continued focus on event group development towards high performance including targeted junior talent identification & direction, will be circulated in the new year.

The new structure will be supported by the position of Coordinator of Development and Officials Programs in areas such as Club Development, Run, Jump, Throw and other grassroots initiatives.

Athletics Canada would like to remind all athletes to consult their regular physicians to ensure that all their basic vaccines are up to date.

Furthermore, as athletes travel frequently and have contact with many people, Hepatitis A and B vaccines (or the combination vaccine) are highly recommended.

We recommend that athletes also get vaccinated with the regular seasonal flu vaccine. This is usually available through a large number of locations across the country in October and November. This needs to be repeated every year.

Canada is developing a vaccine for H1N1 (swine) flu. This vaccine is not available yet but is expected to be out in November of this year. Do not confuse this with regular flu (influenza) vaccine. Although we do not have all the information available yet, Athletics Canada will almost surely recommend that athletes get vaccinated with the H1N1 vaccine.

It is our belief that vaccinations can be considered a natural form of medicine as they work by stimulating and readying your immune system from subsequent attack. Even when a vaccine is not 100% effective, there is often some protection offered from similar or modified viruses.

Although viruses may attack different population groups with varying virulence, keep in mind that even athletes may contract an illness, which, at the very least, will shut down their training for a period of time.
