Athlete Club Affiliation, Transfers, and Out of Province Athletes
This page covers adding unattached athletes to your roster, 2nd claim club status, club transfers, and athletes registered with another province.
Club transfers
These rules apply to athletes transferring between BC Athletics affiliated clubs.
During the season
Complete the Athlete Club Transfer Approval Request Form. A transfer during the calendar year requires the written approval of the president of both clubs.
If you change clubs mid year without that approval, you must compete unattached for the remainder of the year.
At the end of the year
You may transfer clubs at the end of the calendar year without a Transfer Form.
Restriction
Athletes may not transfer clubs solely to form a team for a provincial or national championship.
Unattached athletes
An athlete registered as unattached may choose to affiliate with a BC Athletics club at any point.
The club completes this step: email cristi.lundman@bcathletics.org to have the athlete added to your roster. No Transfer Form is required, since the athlete is not moving between clubs.
This process does not apply to athletes competing unattached as a result of an unapproved mid year club change. Those athletes remain unattached for the balance of the calendar year.
2nd claim club status
2nd claim status lets an athlete train with a second club while remaining registered with their primary club for training and competition.
2nd claim is for training purposes only. A 2nd claim athlete continues to compete for their First Claim Club.
Two rules to be aware of
- A Second Claim athlete may not displace a First Claim athlete on any team.
- Athletes may not take up 2nd claim status solely to form a team for a provincial or national championship.
How to apply
The Second Claim Club Form must be signed by the athlete and both clubs. The 2nd claim club initiates it. The form is automatically forwarded to the primary club and to BC Athletics for signatures, and approval is then sent to both clubs and the athlete.
Athletes changing clubs initiate the transfer themselves by completing the Athlete Club Transfer Approval Request Form
Out of province athletes
Athletes who are Athletics Canada members registered with another province may take part in a BC Athletics affiliated club.
- A BC Athletics Special Programs membership is required. A current home province membership is treated as equivalent.
- Double check that the athlete does hold a current membership in their home province, using this look up tool.
- For competition purposes, the athlete with represent their home club and province where they hold a competitive membership.
