COVID-19 Response: Return to Sport – for Athletics

BC Athletics Update - Coronavirus (COVID 19) - #7

April 30, 2020

COVID-19 Response: “Return to Sport – for Athletics”

In response to recent media coverage and discussions on “Return to Sport”, we want to assure all members that BC Athletics is in the conversation with all provincial / national agencies and organizations.

The BC Provincial Health Officer/Ministry of Health will announce when Phase 1 of a return to sport is allowed. Guidelines for Phase 1 have been provided to the Provincial Sport Organizations through the BC Ministry, BC Govt Sport Branch, and viaSport. They will, when Phase 1 is allowed and monitored for effectiveness, move to providing guidelines for Phases 2 and 3.

BC Athletics with Athletics Canada and it’s member branches, SportBC, and viaSport are working on a “Return to Sport” strategy/guidelines/requirements with appropriate protocols for Athletics that could be implemented once Phase 1 of the BC Athletics return to sport plan is approved by the Provincial Health Officer and Ministry of Health. The health and safety of all involved remains the number one priority.

Note: any National Sport Organizations plan for Return to Sport must be approved by the BC Provincial Health Officer/Ministry of Health.

On advice from Government and Public Health officials, it remains too early for us to start training in groups or shared facilities as the risks of transmission and becoming infected are still very high. It will remain entirely dependent on Local, Provincial and National public health regulations as to when small group in-person training will again be possible.

BC Athletics will, as the BC Athletics Return to Sport Plan (Phase 1) is developed, communicate it widely through the website, email newsletter, and social media channels.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping to insure the health, safety, and well-being of everyone in British Columbia and Canada.

Sincerely,

BC Athletics Board of Directors and Staff
