Remembering John May

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN MAY

There is an empty seat in the bleachers down at the Vanier Oval in Courtenay. For more than 35 years, it was occupied by a gentleman by the name of John May. Hurdles coach extraordinaire, mentor, advocate, ultimate believer in the pursuit of personal best, and papa bear. He will be sorely missed.

Fiercely dedicated to his craft, John was always there for his athletes, and to be accurate, this includes all athletes, regardless of affiliation. If you were part of the track & field community, then you were a part of his extended family.

Over the years, John led a deep roster of successful athletes in the sprints and hurdles. With an engineering mind, he taught both the ‘how’, and the ‘why’ of these challenging disciplines. He coached with a belief in what each person was capable of, and worked hard to provide opportunities for each person to discover the potential that he saw. His dedication remains truly inspiring.

After so many years, it will be very strange indeed. To be at the track, and not see John.

We wish the May family strength & peace during this very difficult time.
