BC Athletics Announces 2020 Virtual XC Championships

Today BC Athletics has announced a Virtual Cross Country Championships that will be held in place of an “In-Person” Championships. Unfortunately, due to increasing COVID-19 related restrictions, we are not able to host an in-person event for the 2020 BC Cross Country Championships. BUT, in its place, we are excited to announce details for a VIRTUAL Championships that will give an opportunity for athletes across the Province to compete against one another in a virtual format!

More details and registration information will be released shortly via the BC Athletics newsletter, social media, and website.

Additional Details on the Decision to Cancel an In-Person Championship

There have been a number of factors at play regarding in person competition. The recent orders of the Provincial Health Officer, limiting travel into/out of the Lower Mainland for sport and non-essential travel, to limit the spread of COVID 19 made it impossible for BC Athletics to host a competition for all of our members.

The Vancouver Thunderbirds were working with BCA to bring the Championships to the Lower Mainland to reduce some travel for members but, the venues that we had initial permission to host the event required us to receive a Provincial Health Officer exemption. The application was submitted to the Office on October 16 and, as of Saturday November 7th, we had not received a response. With the new orders announced on Nov 7th, we knew it would not be possible.

BC Athletics would like to thank the Vancouver Thunderbirds and their President, Nigel Hole, for their work in transitioning the event to the Lower Mainland and the Prairie Inn Harriers for their cooperation on the 2020 event.

We now look forward to 2021, when we hope to be back running together in person.
